Metsola says an MEP was "filmed apparently" damaging an exhibition; Rima Hassan admits removing an Israeli flag, denies trampling it and calls the claims "factually false"
The President of the European Parliament says a member was filmed damaging an exhibition on the victims of 7 October. Rima Hassan, the French MEP named in reports, says she took down an Israeli flag but did not trample it. Libération says no video yet settles it. We hold three reports.
The accusation. Roberta Metsola, the Parliament's president, said a member "a été filmé apparemment en train de dégrader une exposition" ("was filmed apparently damaging an exhibition"), Le Figaro reports. Le Figaro says the Parliament takes the accusations "extrêmement au sérieux". The quote it carries does not name the member. Its headline names Hassan.
The reply. Hassan says Metsola's claims are "factually false", Politico Europe reports. Libération says she admits removing an Israeli flag on Monday 5 October and denies trampling it.
Israel. Israel's foreign minister calls the act "honteux" ("shameful"), Le Figaro reports.
Four verbs for one act
| Outlet | Verb | Which flags | Video? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Le Figaro | aurait renversé (reportedly knocked over); Metsola: dégrader (damage) | Israeli | Metsola says filmed, "apparemment" |
| Libération | retiré (removed); trampling (piétiné) denied | Israeli; headline adds the EU flag | none yet settles it |
| Politico Europe | claims "factually false" | Israeli | not in the text we hold |
What is not settled
- Whether Hassan trampled the flag. She denies it. No report we hold shows she did.
- Whether a film exists, and what it shows. Metsola says the member was filmed. Libération says no recording yet settles it.
- Whether an EU flag was involved. Only Libération's headline says so.
- What the Parliament will do. No report we hold says.
What this is about. A French member of the European Parliament is accused by the Parliament's own president of damaging an exhibition inside the building. She says the accusation is false.
How it got here. On 7 October 2023 Hamas led an attack on southern Israel. Israel's war in Gaza followed. The war has divided European politics ever since, and the European Parliament with it. Libération says a group from the European right organised an exhibition in the Parliament as a tribute to the victims of 7 October. It says the incident took place there on Monday 5 October 2026, two days before the third anniversary of the attack.
The actors.
- Rima Hassan is a French MEP. She was elected in June 2024 on the list of La France Insoumise (LFI), which sits in The Left group in the Parliament. She was born in a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria. She is a prominent advocate for Palestine and a critic of Israel's conduct of the war.
- Roberta Metsola is the President of the European Parliament. She is a Maltese member of the EPP, the Parliament's largest group. She has held the office since January 2022 and was re-elected in July 2024. The president chairs the chamber, speaks for it, and can impose penalties on members for misconduct under the Parliament's rules.
- Israel's foreign minister has joined in, Le Figaro reports. Israel is not an EU member. It is tied to the Union by an Association Agreement.
What is at stake. Hassan faces a possible penalty and damage to her standing in the chamber if the accusation holds. If it does not, Metsola's word as presiding officer is in question. The dispute turns on evidence: whether a film exists and what it shows.
Where it stands. Le Figaro reports that the Parliament is taking the accusations very seriously. Hassan disputes them. No report we hold says a penalty has been proposed, or that any film has been made public.
What is being argued about
- Whether Rima Hassan trampled an Israeli flag or only removed it
- Whether a film of the incident exists, as Metsola says
- Whether an EU flag was involved as well
- Israel's foreign minister condemning the act
