MSNBC says $81 billion, The Washington Post says $110 billion: one Paramount–Warner deal, two prices
Paramount Skydance closed its purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery on Tuesday, putting CNN and the Warner studios under one owner. Five outlets agree that it closed. They do not agree on the price, and neither outlet that gives a figure says what it counts.
What all five agree on. Paramount Skydance closed its deal for Warner Bros. Discovery on Tuesday. MSNBC, The Washington Post, The Hill, The New York Times and Reuters all report it.
Where they split: the price.
| Outlet | Price given | Says what it counts? |
|---|---|---|
| MSNBC | $81 billion | No |
| The Washington Post | $110 billion | No |
| The Hill | "multibillion-dollar" | — |
| The New York Times | none in the text we hold | — |
| Reuters | none, "mega" merger | — |
The gap is $29 billion. Two prices for one deal often means one counts only the shares and the other adds the debt the buyer takes on. Neither report says which applies here.
Where they split: what the deal is. - The Hill says it creates "the largest provider in news, sports and entertainment offerings in the world". It gives no source and no measure. - Reuters calls the new company a "Hollywood powerhouse" in its headline. - MSNBC says the deal forms a "new Hollywood giant". - The New York Times is the only one to name a cost: the company is "saddled with debt", and leaders "hinted at cost cuts" in a memo to staff.
What is not settled - Which figure is the price paid, and whether either one includes debt. - How much debt the company carries. No report we hold gives a number. - What the cuts are, and who they fall on. Only The New York Times mentions them, and we hold only its summary. - For most of these outlets we hold only a headline or an opening paragraph.
What this is about. One company now owns both CNN and the Warner Bros. film and television studios. It is Paramount Skydance, which already owned CBS and Paramount Pictures.
How it got here. - 2025: Skydance takes Paramount. Skydance Media is the studio run by David Ellison. In August 2025 it completed its merger with Paramount Global, owner of CBS News and Paramount Pictures. The new company became Paramount Skydance, led by Ellison. - 2022: Warner Bros. Discovery is formed. It came from joining AT&T's WarnerMedia with Discovery. It owns the Warner Bros. studios, HBO, CNN and a set of cable channels. - Late 2025: Warner is put up for sale. Warner Bros. Discovery opened itself to bidders. Netflix agreed to buy its studios and streaming business. Paramount Skydance then made a rival offer for the whole company, including CNN, and took it straight to shareholders. - Early 2026: Paramount wins. After months of competing offers and legal fights, Warner Bros. Discovery accepted Paramount's raised bid and Netflix stepped back. MSNBC describes "a roughly yearlong fight". The New York Times describes "a legal battle".
Who is involved and why. - Paramount Skydance wanted size: more films, more channels, more shows for its streaming service. - Warner Bros. Discovery's shareholders chose between the offers. - Netflix was the rival bidder for the studios. - Workers at both companies. Mergers on this scale are usually paid for partly with borrowed money, and borrowing is often followed by cuts.
What is at stake. Two of the oldest Hollywood studios and two national news operations, CBS News and CNN, are now under one owner. That raises questions about how much choice audiences have, how many jobs survive, and how independent the newsrooms remain.
Where it stands. The deal closed on 6 October 2026. The price, the debt and the cuts are all still unclear in the reporting we hold.
What is being argued about
- Whether the deal is worth $81 billion or $110 billion, and what each figure counts
- CNN and the Warner studios under one owner
- Debt on the combined company and cuts signalled to staff
- Whether the merged company is the world's largest, as one outlet states
