NewsMaker gives 41 and 44 for Moldova's 2026 airspace violations; Ziarul de Gardă says 11 times 2022

Moldova's Defence Ministry, as both outlets report it, counts 81 violations of the country's airspace by Russian- and Iranian-made missiles and drones since 2022. NewsMaker gives two different figures for this year in the same report. Only one of them adds up.

The total. Ziarul de Gardă and NewsMaker both cite a Defence Ministry communiqué: 81 violations of Moldova's airspace from 2022 to 2026. Both say the missiles and drones were Russian- and Iranian-made, decoy drones included.

The contradiction. NewsMaker's first paragraph says incidents this year "rose to 41". Its year-by-year list gives "2026 — 44", counted up to 24 September.

Year NewsMaker's list
2022 4
2023 6
2024 10
2025 17
2026 44 (lede: 41)
Total 81

Only 44 makes the list add up to 81. Ziarul de Gardă's headline says 2026 had 11 times as many violations as 2022. With 4 in 2022, that also means 44.

Who is named. Ziarul de Gardă says, citing the ministry, that the rise came "against the backdrop of the Russian Federation's intensified air attacks on Ukraine". NewsMaker says where the weapons were made. It does not say who fired them.

Radar. NewsMaker's headline says radar did not detect all of the objects. The text we hold gives no number and no source for that.

What is not settled - Every figure is the ministry's. Neither outlet has an independent count. - How many objects radar missed, and how anyone knows, is not in the reporting we hold. - Neither report we hold says what the ministry means by one "incident": one drone, or one flight of several.

What this is about. Missiles and drones from Russia's air war on Ukraine keep crossing into Moldova, a small neighbouring country that is not part of the war.

How it got here. The war began in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Since then it has struck Ukrainian cities, ports and power plants with long-range missiles and drones, some of them Iranian-made or built to Iranian designs. Many of these routes pass near Ukraine's south-west, around the port city of Odesa. Moldova lies right beside that region. It borders Ukraine to the north, east and south, and Romania to the west. A drone or missile flying near that border can cross into Moldovan skies.

The actors. Russia runs the air campaign. Ukraine is its target, and it tries to shoot down what comes in. Moldova is a former Soviet republic. Its constitution makes it a neutral state. It applied to join the European Union after the full-scale invasion and became a candidate in June 2022. It also contains Transnistria, a breakaway region on the Ukrainian border where Russian troops have been based since the early 1990s. Romania, Moldova's western neighbour, is in both NATO and the EU.

What is at stake. Each crossing is a violation of a neutral country's sovereignty. It also raises the chance of debris or a stray weapon hitting Moldovan ground. Moldova's government has to decide how to detect these incursions and how to respond, both to Moscow and in its dealings with its EU and NATO neighbours. NewsMaker's headline says radar did not catch all of them. If that is true, the official count is a minimum.

Where it stands. By the Defence Ministry's count as reported, the number of violations has risen every year since 2022. This year's figure is already the highest, with more than three months of the year still to go.

What is being argued about

  • How many times Moldova's airspace was violated in 2026: 41 or 44
  • Russian- and Iranian-made missiles and drones crossing from the war in Ukraine
  • Whether Moldova's radar detects every incursion
  • Who is named as acting behind the rise
Violations of Moldova's airspace by year, Defence Ministry figuresChart
The 2026 figure runs to 24 September. The same report gives 41 for 2026 in its first paragraph, but only 44 adds up to the total of 81.

41 or 44: the yearly table settles it

Moldova's defence ministry, as reported, counts 81 incursions since 2022. One report gives 41 for this year in its lede and 44 in its table. Only 44 adds up: 4, 6, 10, 17 and 44 make 81.

44 this year, per the yearly table 41 this year, per the same report's lede

Made in Russia, or sent by Russia

Both reports say the drones and missiles were Russian- and Iranian-made. One also names Russia's air attacks on Ukraine as the reason incidents rose. The other names no one as acting.

Claims and verdicts

unverified Moldova's airspace has been violated 81 times since 2022 by Russian- and Iranian-made missiles and drones.
Ziarul de Gardă and NewsMaker both take the figure from the same Defence Ministry communiqué, so it is one account. Neither gives an independent count.

false There have been 41 violations of Moldova's airspace in 2026.
NewsMaker's lede says 41, but its own yearly breakdown gives 44 for 2026 up to 24 September, and only 44 adds up to the total of 81 (4+6+10+17+44). Ziarul de Gardă's headline says 2026 has 11 times the 2022 count, which also means 44.

true By the Defence Ministry's figures, 2026 has 11 times as many airspace violations as 2022.
Ziarul de Gardă's headline says so, and NewsMaker's breakdown of the ministry figures gives 4 in 2022 and 44 in 2026, which is exactly 11 times. The comparison is only as reliable as the ministry's own count.
