NOS calls the Hague rally's organisers 'far-right'; De Telegraaf calls it a 'so-called' protest against immigration
Riot police broke up an anti-immigration rally on the Malieveld in The Hague on Saturday, and part of the city is under an emergency order. The two Dutch outlets we hold agree on what happened. They disagree on what to call the people who organised it.
Two names for one group. NOS calls the organisers "de extreemrechtse organisatie Wij Zijn Het Volk" (the far-right organisation Wij Zijn Het Volk) in its own voice. De Telegraaf writes "de zogenoemde 'Wij zijn het volk'-demonstratie" (the so-called demonstration). It says the protest was against government plans, "nadrukkelijk tegen immigratie" (expressly against immigration), and gives no political label.
| NOS | De Telegraaf (2 reports) | |
|---|---|---|
| Name for the group | "far-right organisation" | "so-called", own name only |
| Cause stated | none | government plans, immigration |
| Crowd | "a few hundred" | "several hundred" |
| Chant in headline | no | "Hamas Hamas, Joden aan het gas" |
| Arrests | "an unknown number" | "several" |
What both carry. The rally was dissolved. The city told NOS so, and De Telegraaf says the police did it. An emergency order covers part of The Hague. NOS says rioters kept throwing fireworks, sticks and smoke bombs, and the riot police then used the water cannon.
Who speaks. NOS quotes Justice Minister Van Weel on "Hitlergroeten, antisemitische leuzen, geweld tegen de politie" (Hitler salutes, antisemitic slogans, violence against the police). None of the 3 reports quotes an organiser.
What is not settled. How many people were arrested or hurt. How long the emergency order runs. What the organisers say they wanted. We hold only the opening paragraphs of De Telegraaf's two reports, not its full live blog.
What this is about. A group calling itself Wij Zijn Het Volk ("We Are the People") held a rally against immigration in The Hague on Saturday 19 September 2026. Riot police broke it up.
How it got here. Immigration and asylum have been at the centre of Dutch politics for years. In July 2024 Dick Schoof became prime minister of a four-party cabinet built around Geert Wilders' PVV. The cabinet promised the strictest asylum policy the country had had. It fell in June 2025 when the PVV walked out, saying asylum measures were moving too slowly. The Netherlands voted again on 29 October 2025.
NOS reports that a year before Saturday, an anti-immigration demonstration on the same field got out of hand. Rioters threw stones at the police and set police cars on fire. A group moved into the city, damaged the office of the D66 party and attacked journalists. Saturday's rally fell on that anniversary.
The place. The Malieveld is a large open field in central The Hague, beside the main station. It is where the city's big protests are usually held. The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government and parliament; Amsterdam is the capital.
The actors. - The city of The Hague permits protests and can ban or end them. On Saturday it banned a planned march and then ended the rally. - The mayor can issue an emergency order (noodbevel) under Dutch municipal law. The order lets police remove people from an area. - The ME is the Dutch riot police. - The justice minister, Van Weel, answers for the police nationally.
What is at stake. Where the Netherlands draws the line between a lawful protest against immigration and the Hitler salutes and antisemitic chants reported on Saturday. And how the press names the people on the field.
Where it stands. NOS, citing the regional broadcaster Omroep West, reports that the Malieveld is empty and the riot police are still blocking access to the city. No report we hold gives a figure for arrests or injuries.
What is being argued about
- Whether to call Wij Zijn Het Volk far-right, or use only its own name
- The antisemitic chants and Hitler salutes reported from the Malieveld
- The emergency order over part of The Hague
- The anniversary of last year's riot on the same field
