NOS counts 600,000 who registered, Le Figaro says "several hundred thousand"; Libération sees "on est chez nous", Mediapart's expert sees a search for meaning
Pope Leo XIV said mass on the Place de la Concorde on the second day of a four-day visit to France. The reports we hold do not agree on how many came, how many police guarded it, or what the crowd meant. None of them gives an actual count of who attended.
The crowd. Four outlets write "hundreds of thousands". None of them gives a count. The only exact number, 600,000, appears in NOS as the organisers' figure for people who registered. Rzeczpospolita gives the same number as the crowd French media expected. Le Figaro's report was filed before the mass began.
| Outlet | Crowd | Source of the figure |
|---|---|---|
| NOS | "honderdduizenden"; 600,000 registered | the organisers; counts registrations |
| Le Figaro | "plusieurs centaines de milliers" | none given |
| Rzeczpospolita | "kilkaset tysięcy"; 600,000 expected | French media; an expectation |
| Observador | "centenas de milhares" | none given |
Security. NOS says 14,500 police, soldiers and firefighters were deployed, at an estimated cost of €27 million. Rzeczpospolita says nearly 12,000 police, gendarmes and soldiers. The two may be counting different forces.
The meaning. In an opinion piece, Libération calls the enthusiasm "prétendu" (supposed) and says it hides an assertion of identity of the "on est chez nous" kind. In Mediapart, the political scientist Olivier Roy says 16- to 25-year-olds do not see religion as identity and are searching for meaning. Brussels Signal leads on something else: the Pope telling Macron that the right to life is the foundation of all other rights.
Not settled. - How many people actually came. Nobody we hold gives a count. - Which forces each security figure covers. - Who pays the €27 million. NOS gives a cost but not a payer. - Whether the Pope's words to Macron were aimed at any French law. Brussels Signal does not say. - We hold only the opening of Libération's piece, not its full argument.
What this is about. The head of the Catholic Church is on a four-day visit to France. The argument is over what the huge turnout means in a country that keeps religion out of the state by law.
How it got here. Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, was elected pope in May 2025 after the death of Pope Francis. He is the first pope from the United States. Francis went to Marseille in 2023 but never made a full state visit to France. France has kept church and state apart since a law of 1905, a principle it calls laïcité. Notre-Dame de Paris was badly damaged by fire in 2019 and reopened in December 2024. The Pope visited it on the first day of this trip. In March 2024 France wrote the freedom to have an abortion into its constitution. The Catholic Church opposes abortion.
The actors. - The Pope is on a pastoral visit: a youth rally at the Stade de France, the Paris mass, then Lourdes, one of Catholicism's main pilgrimage sites. - Emmanuel Macron, the President, met him. Rzeczpospolita reports that he is not attending the mass. - Candidates for next year's presidential election attended, according to Rzeczpospolita: two former prime ministers, Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal, and Marine Le Pen of the Rassemblement National. - The French state closed off central Paris and deployed thousands of security staff.
What is at stake. In a secular republic, a crowd this size is read politically. One reading sees a revival of faith. Another sees a claim about who France belongs to. A third sees a church pressing its positions on life and bioethics on a government. How the crowd is counted and described shapes which reading wins.
Where it stands. The mass took place on Saturday 26 September. The Pope travels on to Lourdes that evening.
What is being argued about
- Whether 600,000 is a count of the crowd, a registration total or a forecast
- Two different figures for the security forces, 14,500 and nearly 12,000
- Whether the enthusiasm is faith or an "on est chez nous" assertion of identity
- The Pope telling Macron that the right to life comes first
