One line from Peskov: Censor.NET says Zelensky "must go to Moscow", Life.ru says "the invitation still stands"
Nine reports carry the Kremlin's answer to Zelensky's offer to meet Putin at the G20 in Miami. They agree on the sentence and differ on what it means — and on what to call the two men. Whether Putin goes to Miami at all is undecided.
The answer is one sentence. Dmitry Peskov said on 12 September that if Zelensky wants to meet Putin, he can come to Moscow. Zelensky had said he wanted to meet on the sidelines of the G20 in Miami.
The wording around it is not.
| Outlet | The answer, in its words | Names the two men |
|---|---|---|
| Life.ru | "the invitation still stands" — asserted, not quoted | both by their offices |
| Regnum | "he can come to Moscow" | "head of the Kyiv regime"; "President of Russia" |
| Censor.NET | Zelensky "must go to Moscow" | "the Russian dictator's spokesman"; "President of Ukraine" |
| The Moscow Times | the Kremlin "dismisses" it — headline only | neither |
| Obozrevatel | — | "The Russian dictator has not attended a G20 summit since 2019" |
Whether Putin travels is open. Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov says the trip has "not yet been discussed"; the Kremlin says there is no decision. In April, The Moscow Times reports, the Kremlin said Putin could travel after Trump called his attendance very helpful.
Not settled. Lavrov is reported saying Russia is ready to talk but will not pause the war while talks run. Two reports carry it, from one set of remarks; we hold no body text for the state wire's version. No Ukrainian or independent report we hold covers it. And nothing we hold gives Kyiv's reply to the Moscow invitation.
This story is about where Ukraine's and Russia's presidents might meet, if they meet at all.
How it got here. - 2014: Russia annexed Crimea. A war began in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed forces. - 24 February 2022: Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Moscow calls it a "special military operation". Ukraine calls it a war of aggression, and most UN member states have voted to condemn it. - Spring 2022: Russian and Ukrainian delegations held talks in Belarus and Istanbul. The talks broke down. - 2025: Donald Trump returned to the White House and pressed both sides for a settlement. Direct delegation talks resumed in Istanbul, and Trump met Putin in Alaska in August. None of it ended the war. - The two presidents have met in person once, in Paris in December 2019. That was before the full-scale invasion.
Who is involved, and why. - Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine since 2019, says he wants to meet Putin face to face. - Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, decides whether that happens and where. - Dmitry Peskov is Putin's press secretary. Yuri Ushakov is Putin's foreign-policy aide. Sergei Lavrov is Russia's foreign minister. - The G20 is an annual summit of the largest economies. This year the United States hosts it, in Miami on 14–15 December, Obozrevatel reports. Obozrevatel also reports that Putin has not attended a G20 summit in person since 2019.
What is at stake. - A meeting would be the first between the two leaders since Russia's full-scale invasion. - Where they meet matters. A summit abroad puts them on neutral ground, with a US host in the room. A meeting in Moscow happens on Russia's terms, in the capital of the country that invaded. Zelensky has turned down Moscow before and invited Putin to Kyiv instead.
Where it stands. - Russia says it has been invited to Miami. Ushakov says Putin's trip has not been discussed. - The Kremlin's answer to Zelensky's offer is Moscow. Censor.NET says the Kremlin has made that answer before. - We hold no report of Kyiv's reply.
What is being argued about
- Peskov's answer to Zelensky's offer to meet at the G20 in Miami, and the different ways the reports name the two men
- Whether Putin attends the G20 summit in Miami at all
- Lavrov's condition on talks, which appears in Russian reports only
