One mountain, four names: seven reports state Trump's threat to Pickaxe Mountain, IRNA files it as 'Trump's claim'

Trump said on Friday the US 'may hit Pickaxe Mountain in Iran very soon'. Eight reports in five languages carry the words. They give the site four names, one heads the threat as a claim, and only one says what is buried there.

The threat. Trump said the US may hit Pickaxe Mountain in Iran 'very soon'. Eight reports carry the remarks, in five languages, and none disputes that he said them.

'Warmongering', once. IRNA and Shargh both call him 'the warmongering president of America'. The sentence is word for word the same in both, so that is one wire source and not two.

Whether it is a war. Ynet alone carries Trump's denial that it is one: 'it's small money. We lost 18 soldiers, in Vietnam you lost 100,000.' Le Figaro reads the same remarks as Trump minimising the war before the midterms — 'c'est de la gnognotte' — and calls it the war in Iran in its own headline. Anadolu says he gave no timeframe.

What the coverage does not settle. What is at the site: only the Jerusalem Post describes it, and cites nothing for the description. The 18-soldier figure is Trump's own, and no report we hold tests it. None carries an Iranian casualty figure, and none carries an Iranian official reply.

What this is about. The United States says it may bomb a fortified site inside Iran, in a war between the two countries that is now in its seventh month.

How it got here. - Iran has enriched uranium for two decades. It says the programme is civilian. Israel and the United States say it is a path to a bomb. - In 2015 Iran accepted limits on enrichment in return for sanctions relief. This was the nuclear deal known as the JCPOA. In 2018, in his first term, Trump took the US out of it. Iran then expanded enrichment. - Natanz is Iran's main enrichment plant. Ynet reports that after a 2020 explosion there, which may have been sabotage, Iran began tunnelling into a nearby mountain as an underground replacement. Its Persian name is Kuh-e Kolang Gaz La. In English it is Pickaxe Mountain. - In June 2025 Israel and Iran fought a 12-day war, and the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites. Israeli officials told Ynet that centrifuges were then moved into Pickaxe Mountain. - In late February 2026 a US-Israeli offensive started the current war, Le Figaro reports.

Who is in it. - The United States. Trump says the war's aim is to stop an Iranian bomb. - Iran. Its state agency calls the US strikes aggression. - Israel. It launched the offensive with the US and has watched the site for years. - The Gulf states. Several host US forces. Iran has fired on them in reply to US strikes, Le Figaro reports.

What is at stake. - Whether Iran keeps any way to enrich uranium. - The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea lane between Iran and Oman that carries much of the world's oil. Who controls it is disputed. Earlier this month Al Jazeera said it was closed and CentCom said tankers were crossing. - Fuel prices. Le Figaro says they threaten Trump's Republicans in November's midterm elections.

Where it stands. The fighting paused for about a month. On 30 August the US struck again. It said it was stopping rockets loaded with sea mines. Ynet says a US wave on the Tuesday after hit about 60 targets. Trump puts the US dead at 18. None of the reports we hold gives an Iranian toll. Ynet, citing the Wall Street Journal, says US deployments are being extended into 2027.
