One rejected Iranian offer, three names: a Hormuz plan to Asharq Al-Awsat, a ceasefire proposal to the Jerusalem Post, a trade reopening in Trump's words
Trump says Iran's proposal "is not acceptable". None of the six reports we hold sets out its terms. They cannot agree on what it was.
The rejection is not in doubt. LBCI carries Trump in his own words: "I reject the Iranian proposal" and "the proposal is not acceptable". Hours earlier, Asharq Al-Awsat and The Jerusalem Post had both reported it, and both attributed it to "reports".
What he rejected is in doubt. Each outlet names the offer differently:
| Outlet | What it calls the offer | How it reports the rejection |
|---|---|---|
| Asharq Al-Awsat | "a plan to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz", citing Tehran | "reports indicated" |
| The Jerusalem Post | "Iranian ceasefire proposal" | "- report" in the headline |
| LBCI (3 headlines) | a deal under which Iran would "reopen trade immediately" | Trump quoted directly |
| Shargh | does not mention the rejection | — |
Two signals point the other way. The Jerusalem Post's headline says Trump "expects war to continue after midterm elections". Its first line quotes an unnamed US official describing "positive, constructive discussions with Iran through mediators". In Tehran, Shargh's currency report cites unnamed economic experts. They treat a "return to the Islamabad memorandum" as still possible.
Trump's reason. Iran wants the deal "because it is suffering heavy losses", LBCI quotes him. No report we hold checks that claim.
What is not settled - The proposal's terms. Not one report we hold publishes them. - Whether Trump expects the war to outlast the midterms. Only one headline says so, and it cites an unnamed report. - Tehran's response to the rejection. We hold no Iranian government statement on it.
What this is about. The United States and Iran are at war. Iran made an offer to end or ease it this week, and President Donald Trump has turned it down.
How it got here. Washington and Tehran have been adversaries since the 1979 revolution. The core dispute for two decades has been Iran's nuclear programme. The 2015 nuclear deal capped Iran's enrichment in return for sanctions relief. Trump withdrew the United States from it in 2018 and reimposed sanctions, and Iran then expanded its enrichment. After the Gaza war that followed the attacks of 7 October 2023, Israel and Iran moved from a shadow conflict to direct strikes. In June 2025 Israel struck Iran and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. The present US–Iran war has run for nearly seven months and is at a stalemate, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.
The strait. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow channel between Iran and Oman. Gulf oil and gas pass through it to the world. Asharq Al-Awsat calls it "key to the world's oil supply" and "central to the conflict". Its closure is why the war matters far beyond the two countries.
The actors. Trump decides Washington's terms. Steve Witkoff is his envoy. Abbas Araghchi is Iran's foreign minister. The two met on Tuesday at the UN General Assembly in New York, Asharq Al-Awsat reports. Mediators carry messages between the two sides, a US official told The Jerusalem Post. None of the reports says who the mediators are.
What is at stake. If a deal reopens the strait and trade, the war could wind down. Without one, the stalemate continues. Iran's currency, the rial, rises and falls with each piece of news about the talks, Shargh's market report shows.
Where it stands. Trump has rejected this offer. A US official says the talks through mediators go on, including on nuclear issues. Shargh refers to an "Islamabad memorandum" as a possible way back. None of the reports we hold explains what that memorandum contains.
