Police say 10,000 in Magdeburg, the organisers 20,000, Le Figaro's reporter a few thousand
Saxony-Anhalt votes on Sunday and the AfD is expected to win. Seven reports cover the eve of it. Two counted the democracy rally in Magdeburg and produced three figures between them, because they were counting different things and only one says so. The reports split again on whether the AfD would govern alone, on whether the BSW would put it in power, and on what to call the party at all.
The crowd. Two of the seven reports cover Saturday's rally on Magdeburg's Domplatz, and between them they publish three figures.
| Reported by | Figure | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | 15,000–20,000 | the organisers', for the Domplatz over the whole day |
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | 10,000 | the police's, for several events across the city |
| Le Figaro | "quelques milliers" | its AFP reporter's own sight; nobody who counted is named |
Only the Frankfurter Allgemeine says which figure is whose, and no report reconciles them.
Who governs. Euractiv says the AfD's lead candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, "has ruled out entering a coalition and says he wants the AfD to govern alone", and quotes nothing for it; the Frankfurter Allgemeine's liveblog headline has him taking office "auch 'mit einer Stimme Mehrheit'". Le Figaro says every party but the BSW has ruled out governing with the AfD. Die Presse gets the BSW's lead candidate, Claudia Wittig, on the record: her party is "das Zünglein an der Waage", some of its supporters "möchten eine Koalition mit der AfD", and it would not sit in an AfD cabinet.
One report each. Welt alone carries the postal-vote inquiry in a Dessau-Roßlau care home, closed on Friday with nothing found, and the proposal to cut the state's federal money if the AfD governs — which constitutional lawyers tell it cannot lawfully be done.
What is not settled. How many people were in Magdeburg. Whether Siegmund would take office one seat short of a majority, or not at all. Whether the BSW clears 5 per cent. Euractiv's 43 per cent for the AfD names no institute and no fieldwork date, and no other report gives a number.
What this is about. Saxony-Anhalt, a state in eastern Germany, elected its state parliament on Sunday 6 September. For the first time, a party that every other major party has refused to work with, the Alternative for Germany (AfD), could take control of a German state.
How it got here. - 1990. Saxony-Anhalt was re-formed from former East German territory at reunification. Its parliament in Magdeburg elects the state premier, who runs schools, police and the state's broadcasting agreements. - 2013. The AfD was founded, first in opposition to euro-area bailouts. It later campaigned mainly against immigration. In 2023 Saxony-Anhalt's domestic intelligence office classified the state party as extremist. - The "firewall". The other parties agreed not to govern with the AfD or rely on its votes. In 2018 the CDU also ruled out working with the Left Party, which Euractiv notes descends from East Germany's ruling party. - 2024. The AfD came first in Thuringia, Telex reports. The other parties kept it out by building a wide coalition that included the new Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), founded that January. - February 2025. Friedrich Merz's CDU/CSU won the federal election with 29%, according to Telex. The AfD was second on 21%. Merz formed a government with the SPD.
The actors. - The AfD, led locally by Ulrich Siegmund. It wants to govern the state. - The CDU, led by the sitting premier, Sven Schulze. It currently governs with the SPD and the FDP. - The Left Party, the SPD and the Greens, possible partners in any government without the AfD. - The BSW. If it clears the 5% threshold, its seats could decide who governs.
What is at stake. A majority needs 42 of the parliament's 83 seats, Telex reports. If the AfD wins alone, Germany would have its first state government led by the far right since 1945, as Le Figaro frames it. If it falls short, the other parties would need a coalition across the firewall, or a minority government. The result also puts pressure on Merz's position. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania votes two weeks later.
Where it stands. The reports we hold were filed before the polls opened. Telex put the AfD on 41.7% and the CDU on 22.6%. Our reports contain no results.

What is being argued about
- How many were on the Domplatz — 10,000, 15,000–20,000 or a few thousand — and whether the three figures are counting the same thing at all.
- Whether Siegmund would take office with one seat of a majority, hold out for governing alone, or decline: no report we hold quotes him on it.
- Whether the BSW clears 5 per cent, and whether it would put the AfD in power — it says it would not join a cabinet, and proposes a non-party minister-president.
- What the party is called: four different descriptions across seven reports, and three that use only its own name.
