Politico Europe says two £36 million donors, taz and the Frankfurter Allgemeine say one gift
Four reports on one weekend give Reform UK's record donation as £36 million, $48.7 million, €42 million and around €40 million. Only one of them names a second donor.
Four reports, four sums. HotNews.ro, citing Reuters, has £36 million — $48.7 million — paid at £1 million a month until the next national election. taz converts the same gift to €42 million. The Frankfurter Allgemeine makes it around €40 million, and calls it one single donation.
Who gave it.
| Outlet | Donor named | Sum printed | Beside the money |
|---|---|---|---|
| Politico Europe | Christopher Harborne, matching Ben Delo a day earlier | £36m each | — |
| HotNews.ro | Ben Delo | £36m / $48.7m | a US conviction, a Trump pardon |
| taz | none — "a crypto billionaire" | €42m | weeks of fraud allegations |
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | none | about €40m, one donation | inquiries into earlier payments |
Not settled. Whether Reform UK was promised £36 million or £72 million. Politico Europe alone reports a second donor; the other three describe a single gift, which makes "the record" a different number in every one of them. Only HotNews.ro gives a payment schedule, so we cannot say what has been paid rather than pledged. The two euro figures differ by €2 million, and neither report shows the rate it used. All four call the sum a record; none names the record it beats. None quotes the party's own account, and neither German report says who is accused in the fraud allegations it places beside the gift.
What this is about. Two cryptocurrency investors have pledged very large donations to Reform UK, a British party led by Nigel Farage.
How it got here.
- 2016–2020. Britain voted to leave the European Union in June 2016 and left on 31 January 2020. Farage was one of the leading campaigners for leaving.
- 2018–2021. He launched the Brexit Party to push for departure. After Britain left, the party renamed itself Reform UK in January 2021. It now campaigns mainly on immigration and on the cost of government.
- July 2024. Labour, led by Keir Starmer, won the general election and formed the government. Farage entered the House of Commons for the first time, as MP for Clacton. Reform UK sits in opposition with a handful of MPs.
- Since then. Reform UK has run at or near the top of many national opinion polls. It now describes itself as a party getting ready to govern. According to HotNews.ro, citing Reuters, that is the stated purpose of the gift.
Who is involved.
- Ben Delo co-founded the crypto exchange BitMEX. He pleaded guilty in the United States in 2022 to breaking anti-money-laundering law, and Donald Trump pardoned him in 2025.
- Christopher Harborne has given to Farage's parties before. Politico Europe calls him a "Reform backer".
- The Electoral Commission regulates party money in Britain. The law has no upper limit on a single donation, but a donor must be on the UK electoral register or be a UK-registered company. Large gifts must be reported publicly.
What is at stake. Britain's next general election must be held by 2029. A payment of £1 million a month until then, which is the schedule HotNews.ro reports, would give one party a steady war chest for the whole run-up. It also puts a spotlight on rules for large and crypto-linked donations, which the Labour government said in 2025 it would tighten.
Where it stands. The pledges were announced on 11 and 12 September 2026. The Frankfurter Allgemeine reports that inquiries into earlier payments to the party are still going on. Neither German report says who is accused in the fraud allegations it mentions, and we cannot say how much of the money has actually been paid.
What is being argued about
- One donation or two, and from whom
- £36m, $48.7m, €42m, about €40m — one gift, four figures
- A conviction, a pardon, and inquiries into earlier payments
- Pledged monthly, or handed over
