What happened. On Prinsjesdag, the day the Dutch budget is presented, trains stopped in part of the Netherlands and hay burned beside motorways. NOS names the A2 near Breukelen and the A28 near Putten and Dwingeloo.

The rails. ProRail says materials were "deliberately placed" on the track, De Telegraaf reports: pipes fixed to the rails. Brussels Signal calls it "potential sabotage" under police investigation. De Standaard and NOS call it sabotage in their own voice.

The fires. NOS says flatly that these are "acties van boerenactivisten". It quotes Farmers Defence Force posts urging supporters to act. De Standaard's headline says farmers set the bales alight. Its body names no one. De Telegraaf says fires "broke out".

Prinsjesdag is the day the Dutch government presents its budget. On that morning trains stopped across parts of the Netherlands and hay burned beside motorways. ProRail, the rail manager, says pipes were fixed to the track in several places, De Telegraaf reports. NOS places fires next to the A2 at Breukelen and the A28 at Putten and Dwingeloo.

Farmers have used roadside fires before in their fight against the government's nitrogen policy, NOS says. It reports that the group Farmers Defence Force told supporters to act that day, and that its leader, Mark van den Oever, asked citizens to protest at town halls in the evening.

Rijkswaterstaat, which runs the motorways, says the fires are out and the traffic disruption over. Brussels Signal reports a police investigation into potential sabotage. Who fixed the pipes to the rails is not settled in any report we hold.
