Rate to 2.5%: De Standaard names a war in Iran, Público names energy prices, Der Standard names neither
Nine reports carry the same quarter-point rise. Four say the Middle East conflict drove it, one says energy prices, three give only the inflation figure, and one gives no reason at all.
The move. The European Central Bank raised its rates by a quarter of a percentage point on 10 September. Five reports put the level at 2.5%; only NOS gives the rate it rose from, 2.25%. NOS and Der Standard both call it the second rise this year.
The reason is where they part.
| What drove it | Reports | In its own words |
|---|---|---|
| The Middle East conflict | 4 of 9 | Le Figaro: "l'inflation liée à la guerre au Moyen-Orient" |
| A war in Iran, named | 1 of those 4 | De Standaard: "Oorlog in Iran dwingt Europese Centrale Bank" |
| Energy prices spreading | 1 of 9 | Público: "a subida dos preços da energia se espalhe" |
| Inflation itself, no cause | 3 of 9 | Der Standard: "mit 3,3 Prozent weit über dem Zielwert" |
| No reason at all | 1 of 9 | Observador |
Who acts. In seven reports the bank raises, warns and decides. In two, something else moves it: De Standaard's war forces its hand, and Público's unattributed fears led it to act. iDNES.cz and Rzeczpospolita attribute the cause to the bank's own warning rather than asserting it.
Not settled. What euro area inflation is: only Der Standard puts a figure on it, 3.3%. NOS's "just over 3 percent" is Dutch inflation, not the bloc's. Whether more rises follow: Observador alone reports the bank saying the increase may not stop here. And which rate moved — iDNES.cz names the deposit rate, Rzeczpospolita says all three main rates, Le Figaro and Público say only "rates".
What this is about. The European Central Bank has raised the cost of borrowing across the euro area. It says it did so to bring rising prices back under control.
How it got here.
- The bank. The ECB was set up in 1998 to run one monetary policy for the countries that share the euro. The EU treaties give it one main job: keeping prices stable. It defines that as 2% inflation over the medium term. Governments cannot instruct it.
- The tool. The ECB's main tool is its interest rate. NOS explains how it works: a higher rate makes borrowing dearer, the economy slows, and prices rise less quickly.
- 2022–2023. Energy prices jumped after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. NOS reports that the ECB responded by raising its rate to a record 4% within a year and a half.
- The cuts. As inflation fell, the bank cut again. Rzeczpospolita puts the total cut at 1.75 percentage points. NOS says the rate was back at 2% last year.
- 2026. NOS reports that prices rose sharply again this spring because of the war in the Middle East, and the ECB raised its rate in June. Rzeczpospolita says it held rates at the next meeting and then moved again on 10 September.
Who decides, and who feels it.
- The ECB's Governing Council takes the decision. It is made up of the bank's six-member Executive Board plus the governor of each euro-country central bank. Christine Lagarde has been its president since 2019.
- Borrowers and savers across the euro countries are affected: mortgages and business loans cost more, and savings accounts may pay more.
- Poland and the Czech Republic are in the EU but not the euro. Their own central banks set their rates.
What is at stake. The ECB sets one rate for many economies whose inflation is not the same. Rzeczpospolita reports the bank warning of two risks at once: inflation staying high and growth slowing. Raise too little and prices keep climbing. Raise too much and the economy may stall.
Where it stands. Rzeczpospolita puts the deposit rate at 2.5%. Observador reports that futures markets expect three more rises by October 2027. The bank says it will decide meeting by meeting. Its next meeting is on 28–29 October, according to Rzeczpospolita.
What is being argued about
- What drove the inflation behind the rise: a war in the Middle East, energy prices, or nothing named at all
- Whether the bank raised rates or was forced to raise them
- What euro area inflation actually is, and whether a second report confirms the figure
- Whether this rise is the last one
