Regnum and Life.ru credit the Washington Post, RIA the WSJ, with calling Kyiv a "frontline city"; Ukrainian outlets count 124 drones and two dead
Russia attacked Kyiv for a whole day. Ukrainian outlets published counts: drones launched, people killed, air-raid alerts. Three Russian reports carried a US paper's verdict that the capital is becoming a frontline city. They do not agree which paper wrote it, or what caused it.
The attack. Kyiv Post reports that Russia launched 124 drones at Kyiv, 86 of them jet-powered. It says two people were killed across the capital. Espreso TV reports that a Russian jet drone hit the Academy of Sciences building on Volodymyrska Street and killed two people. Ukrainska Pravda, citing Kyiv police, says two ballistic missiles fell near homes and did not explode. One person was hurt.
The verdict, as Russian outlets carry it. Three reports repeat a US paper's view that Kyiv is becoming a frontline city. They differ on which paper said it and on the cause.
| Outlet | Credits | Cause given |
|---|---|---|
| Regnum | The Washington Post | "слабой ПВО" (weak air defence) |
| Life.ru | The Washington Post | "реактивных дронов ВС РФ" (Russian jet drones) |
| RIA Novosti | The WSJ | headline only |
A second Life.ru headline goes further: "Как Украина проиграла России битву за небо" ("How Ukraine lost the battle for the sky to Russia"). The body quotes one military expert, Andrei Marochko.
The Ukrainian counts. Obozrevatel says Russia launched more than 2,730 jet Shaheds this month and about 55% were shot down or intercepted. It does not name who counted. Suspilne, citing Ihor Klymenko, counts 235 air-raid alerts in Kyiv since 27 August.
What is not settled. We hold neither American paper's article, so we cannot say who wrote the verdict or what it said. Only Kyiv Post gives the drone count, and it does not say who counted. None of the reports names the dead.
This story is about Russian drone attacks on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and how Russian and Ukrainian outlets describe them.
How it got here. Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The same year, fighting began in the eastern Donbas region between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed armed groups. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Its troops reached the outskirts of Kyiv and withdrew from the north that spring. Since then the front has run through the east and south of Ukraine. Kyiv sits hundreds of kilometres behind it.
Why the capital is hit. Russia has attacked Kyiv from the air throughout the full-scale war, with missiles and with drones. The Shahed is an Iranian-designed attack drone that Russia also builds itself. The reports describe a newer, jet-powered version. Ukraine's air defence tries to shoot these drones down before they reach the city. The more Russia launches, and the faster they fly, the harder that gets.
The actors. Russia is carrying out the strikes. Ukraine's air defence, police and emergency services respond to them. The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, founded in 1918, has its headquarters in central Kyiv. Espreso TV reports that its building was hit. On the Russian side, state and pro-state outlets such as RIA Novosti, Regnum and Life.ru report what foreign papers say about the war.
What is at stake. A capital far from the front is meant to be defended. If drones get through often, daily life there changes. So does the argument over whether Ukraine can protect its cities. That is why a phrase like "frontline city" matters to both sides.
Where it stands. Suspilne counts 235 air-raid alerts in Kyiv since 27 August, lasting 261 hours in total. The attack on 28 September killed two people, according to Kyiv Post and Espreso TV.
What is being argued about
- Which US paper called Kyiv a "frontline city": the Washington Post (Regnum, Life.ru) or the WSJ (RIA Novosti)
- Whether the cause is weak Ukrainian air defence or Russian jet drones
- Two people killed at the Academy of Sciences building; two ballistic missiles that did not explode
- How many jet drones Russia launched and how many were stopped
