Regnum says the halt on Kyiv strikes "expired"; Suspilne says Russia struck "despite Putin's promise"
Fifteen reports on one night over Kyiv and Odesa. Seven name Russia as firing, seven name nobody, and not one gives a figure for anyone hurt.
The night. Ukrainska Pravda reported a ballistic strike on Kyiv in the early hours of 8 September: apartment blocks and an educational building damaged, "people possibly trapped". Obozrevatel said the missiles came "from three directions". RIA Novosti reported explosions in Kyiv, then Odesa, and named nobody firing them.
The pause. Four reports build the night around a three-day halt on strikes on Kyiv, announced for the visit of the US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. They do not agree on what it was.
| Outlet | The halt | The weapon |
|---|---|---|
| Suspilne (Ukraine) | Russia struck "despite Putin's promise" | drones |
| Regnum (Russia) | the period Putin announced "expired" | not stated |
| Life.ru (Russia) | the moratorium "no longer in effect" | 18 ballistic missiles in half an hour |
Who fired. Seven reports name Russia or Russian forces as striking; all seven are Ukrainian outlets. In seven others the explosions thunder and the missiles "are launched" with no actor in the sentence; all seven are Russian outlets. The fifteenth is RIA Novosti on Poland scrambling jets "amid allegedly Russian activity" — Poland's flights stated flat, Russia's hedged.
Not settled. No report we hold gives a number for anyone killed or injured. Life.ru's count of 18 missiles appears nowhere else, and it names no source. No report says who decided the strikes would resume, or when the halt was due to end.
What this is about. Russia fired missiles and drones at Kyiv and Odesa on the night of 8 September 2026, straight after a short pause in its strikes on the Ukrainian capital ended. The pause was tied to US-led talks on ending the war.
How it got here. - 2014: Russia annexed Crimea. Fighting began in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region between Ukraine's forces and Russian-backed forces. That is when the war began. - 24 February 2022: Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Its troops advanced on Kyiv and were pushed back. The front then settled in the east and south, where Russia still holds Ukrainian territory. - Since then: Russia has struck Ukrainian cities, power plants and other infrastructure from the air with missiles and drones. Ukraine has used air-raid alerts, air defences and night curfews to protect people. Suspilne counts 7 September as day 1,658 of the war, counting from the full-scale invasion. - 2025 onwards: US President Donald Trump pressed both sides to reach a settlement. His special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has held talks with Moscow and Kyiv. - September 2026: Regnum and Life.ru report that Vladimir Putin announced a three-day halt on strikes on Kyiv. They say it covered a visit by Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law. Life.ru says the envoys travelled to both Moscow and Kyiv.
The actors. - Russia is fighting the war. Its president, Putin, is the one who announced the halt. - Ukraine is defending its territory. Its air force, emergency service and city officials publish the alerts and the damage reports. - The United States is mediating, and its envoys were the reason for the pause. - Poland borders Ukraine and is a NATO member. It puts military aircraft in the air when Russian strikes come near its border.
What is at stake. A pause tied to a diplomatic visit can show that a side is willing to hold back, or it can be a gesture for the visitors that ends when they leave. For the people of Kyiv, it decides whether nights bring air-raid alerts.
Where it stands. Strikes on Kyiv have resumed. None of the reports we hold says whether talks are continuing, or whether any further pause has been offered or asked for.
What is being argued about
- Whether the three-day halt on strikes on Kyiv expired on its own or was broken
- What hit Kyiv — drones, ballistic missiles, and how many
- Which reports name Russia as firing and which name no one at all
- What none of the reports carries: a count of anyone killed or hurt
