Reuters says court pressure pushed an Arab leader out of Israel's election; Arutz Sheva says the case was dropped after he withdrew
On 2 October Israel's Supreme Court let the Joint List, Ra'am and MK Ofer Cassif run for the 26th Knesset. Balad leader Sami Abu Shehadeh quit the race the same day. Reuters, carried by Al-Monitor, is the only report that says why he quit: the court told him most judges backed disqualifying him.
The rulings. Arutz Sheva, Haaretz and Al-Modon all report that the Supreme Court overturned the bans on the Joint List, Ra'am and Ofer Cassif. All three may run.
The vote. Haaretz alone gives a split. It says the court was unanimous on the two parties, and two of nine judges opposed letting Cassif run.
The withdrawal. Four reports, three ways of telling it:
| Report | What it leads with | Why Abu Shehadeh left |
|---|---|---|
| Reuters, carried by Al-Monitor | His exit, under "court pressure" | The court "advised him that a majority of judges supported disqualifying him" |
| Arutz Sheva | The bans overturned | No reason given. "Proceedings… were dropped after he withdrew", with no actor named |
| Haaretz | The bans overturned | No reason given. "Abu Shehadeh withdrew his candidacy" |
| Al-Modon | The bans overturned | Not in the text we hold |
The charge. Reuters says this was the first time the court signalled it might uphold a bid to disqualify an Arab politician. Reuters also quotes the rights group Adalah, which said the decision "set different standards" for Jewish and Arab citizens. None of the four reports quotes the court, the election committee or Abu Shehadeh.
What is not settled - Whether the court's warning came as Reuters describes it. No other report we hold confirms it. - Who dropped the proceedings, and on what grounds. - How each judge voted on Abu Shehadeh. With no ruling issued, there may be no record. - What Abu Shehadeh says about why he left.
What this is about. Israel's Supreme Court has ruled on which Arab-led parties and candidates may stand in the coming election to the Knesset, Israel's parliament.
How it got here. Israeli election law lets the Central Elections Committee bar a party list or a candidate who denies Israel's existence as a Jewish and democratic state, incites racism, or supports armed struggle against Israel. The committee is made up of representatives of the parties already in the Knesset, so its majority reflects the parliament's majority. Its decisions can be appealed to the Supreme Court. For a single candidate, the court must approve a ban before it takes effect.
For years the committee has voted to bar Arab parties and politicians, and the court has usually overturned those votes. Reuters, carried by Al-Monitor, says this was the first time the court signalled it might uphold such a ban against an Arab politician.
The actors. - The Joint List: an alliance of Arab-led parties. - Ra'am, the United Arab List: an Islamist party. In 2021 it became the first Arab party to join an Israeli governing coalition. - Balad: a nationalist Arab party led by Sami Abu Shehadeh. - Ofer Cassif: a Jewish member of the Knesset from the Arab-Jewish party Hadash, and a sharp critic of the war in Gaza. - Adalah: an Israeli legal-rights group that works for Arab citizens.
What is at stake. Arab citizens of Israel vote mainly for these parties. If a party is banned, its voters lose the list they would choose. Every seat these parties win also affects whether either bloc can form a government. Critics see the bans as a test of whether Arab citizens can take part in politics on equal terms. Backers of the bans say they keep out candidates who reject the state.
Where it stands. The Joint List, Ra'am and Cassif are on the ballot. Abu Shehadeh is not.
