RIA Novosti says the Pope asked Europe to give ground; Censor.NET says he asked the parties to the talks
Pope Leo XIV told European leaders in Metz that peace needs concessions. Three reports we hold name three different parties as the ones asked to concede. The only direct quote we hold says "we".
What he said. Espreso TV quotes the Pope through Reuters. Speaking in Metz on 28 September, he said: "We need to show courage in negotiations and be ready to give up some positions for the higher good of peace." In a separate line he warned against "the illusion that rearmament is the answer".
Who he asked. Three reports give three answers.
| Outlet | Who is asked to give ground | Country named? |
|---|---|---|
| RIA Novosti (Russian state media) | "Europe" | We hold only the headline |
| Censor.NET (Ukraine) | "the parties to the talks" | Says he named neither Ukraine nor Russia |
| Espreso TV (Ukraine) | "we" in the quote; the headline says "peace in Ukraine" | Its body says he did not name Ukraine |
What the quote carries. The quoted line names no party. Europe is addressed in a different line, the one about rearmament. The fact-check rated RIA Novosti's reading, that Europe was the party asked to concede, as misleading.
What the outlets add. Censor.NET's headline sets the call "against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine". Espreso TV adds "Russia's aggressive policy" next to the Pope's words. Neither phrase is his.
What is not settled. - We hold RIA Novosti's headline and none of its text. We cannot say whether the body supports the word "Europe". - We hold only Censor.NET's opening paragraph. - We hold no full text of the speech. We do not know whether it names anyone who should concede.
What this is about. The head of the Catholic Church called for concessions to end a war in Europe. The outlets disagree about whom he was addressing.
How it got here. Russia seized and annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The same year, Russian-backed forces took parts of the Donbas in eastern Ukraine, and fighting there continued for eight years. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Since then the two countries have fought along a front in the east and south. Ukraine is backed by European governments and, with conditions attached, by the United States. Talks to end the war have repeatedly stalled. The dispute that blocks them is land. Espreso TV, citing Reuters, reports that neither side has shown it is ready to give up territory. It also reports that President Volodymyr Zelensky met President Donald Trump in New York last week to discuss a path to peace.
The actors. Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, was elected pope in May 2025. He is the first pope from the United States. The Holy See usually presents itself as a mediator and avoids naming the side it blames. His predecessor, Francis, named Cardinal Matteo Zuppi as his peace envoy for Ukraine in 2023. According to Espreso TV, Zuppi is in Moscow from 28 to 30 September for meetings with Russian officials on the war's humanitarian effects. The Pope spoke in Metz, the French city where Robert Schuman lived. Schuman was one of the founders of what became the European Union. Espreso TV reports that he cited Pope Benedict XV's appeal for a negotiated peace in 1917, during the First World War.
What is at stake. European governments are raising military spending. Espreso TV, citing Reuters, says the rise last year was the largest since the Cold War ended. The Pope questioned that course. Who he meant should concede matters too. Aimed at Europe, his call reads as a message to Kyiv's backers. Aimed at "the parties", it reads as a message to both Russia and Ukraine.
Where it stands. No ceasefire is in force, and none of the reports we hold describes a date for new talks.

What is being argued about
- Whom the Pope asked to give ground: Europe, the parties to the talks, or no one in particular
- Whether he named Ukraine or Russia
- His warning against 'the illusion' of rearmament
- What each outlet added around his words
