Rubio said Ukraine hit US-linked ships 'perhaps not deliberately'. Censor.NET kept the hedge; Life.ru made it 'harsh' words about tankers

The US Secretary of State told Fox News that Ukrainian strikes had repeatedly hit US-linked ships and US oil, and that Washington wants an energy truce. Six reports carry the ship charge. Two keep his qualifier. None names a ship.

What Rubio said. On Fox News on 22 September, Marco Rubio said US-linked ships and US oil shipments had repeatedly been targeted by Ukraine in recent months, "perhaps not deliberately", and that "we cannot allow this", Espreso TV reports, citing Yevropeiska Pravda. He tied recent oil price rises to the Black Sea and to Houthi attacks from Yemen.

What he gave Kyiv. In the same answer, per Espreso TV, he set out Ukraine's case: missiles hit Kyiv every night and Ukraine says it must respond. He also mentioned a 5,000-drone attack on Moscow or Russia about 48 hours earlier.

The truce. Life.ru says Trump will put a mutual halt on energy strikes to Zelensky at their New York meeting. Espreso TV quotes Rubio saying the US would propose it but needs both sides to agree. Espreso TV alone adds that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia is not interested in a temporary truce. Regnum and RIA Novosti lead on "no military solution" and Trump being ready to do everything to end the war.

Not settled. No report names a ship, a date or a place. We hold nothing beyond Rubio's word that the strikes happened. We do not know whether a truce will be put to Moscow as well as to Kyiv.

This story is about a US complaint that Ukraine's strikes on Russian energy are hurting American shipping, and a US push for both sides to stop hitting each other's energy supplies.

How it got here. Russia seized Crimea and backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine in 2014. In February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion. The war is fought on the ground in the east and south, and at long range. Russia has struck Ukraine's power grid and cities with missiles and drones. Ukraine has answered with drone strikes on Russian refineries, oil depots and export ports, the source of much of Moscow's income. Much of that oil leaves by ship across the Black Sea, and so does Ukraine's own grain.

Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 promising to end the war through talks. In March 2025 Washington brokered a short-lived pause on strikes against energy targets. It broke down, with Moscow and Kyiv each accusing the other of breaking it.

The actors. Marco Rubio is the US Secretary of State. Volodymyr Zelensky is Ukraine's president. Dmitry Peskov speaks for Vladimir Putin. World leaders are in New York this week for the UN General Assembly. Censor.NET reports that Trump and Zelensky meet there, joined by Rubio and the envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

What is at stake. Ukraine's long-range strikes are one of the few ways it can hurt Russia's economy. If Washington treats them as a threat to American interests, it has leverage over Kyiv, which depends on US weapons and intelligence. An energy truce would spare Ukraine's grid, but it would also shield Russia's oil trade.

Where it stands. Rubio says a truce needs both sides to agree. The Kremlin says, per Espreso TV, that Russia is not interested in a temporary one.
