Russia's defence ministry says it 'liberated' five settlements; Ukraine's Third Corps says it 'liberated' villages it will not name
On 19 September both armies said they had taken ground in Donetsk region, in different sectors. Each used the same word for its own gains. Neither side's reports mention the other's claim, and nothing we hold confirms either.
Russia's claim. Regnum and Interfax, citing Russia's defence ministry, say Russian forces took five settlements in a day. The text we hold names two: Hulieve and Marivka, on what the ministry calls the Dobropillia direction. Regnum says Russian forces also advanced in Zaporizhzhia region.
Ukraine's claim. Espreso TV, citing Third Corps chief of staff Horbatenko on Suspilne, says Ukrainian forces took Rai-Oleksandrivka near Lyman this week, plus villages the corps is keeping unnamed on purpose. Espreso says corps commander Andriy Biletskyi puts the first stage at 75 sq km cleared.

How it is told. Regnum's report and Espreso's headline both say 'liberated' in their own voice before crediting the military. Interfax calls occupied Donetsk region the 'DNR' without saying it is occupied. Obozrevatel says Putin's deadline for taking the Donbas has been pushed back indefinitely, and gives no source.
What is not settled. Whether either side holds the ground it claims. Which three settlements Russia has not named in the text we hold. Which villages Ukraine will not name. What either side lost: the corps calls Russian losses above expectations and gives no number.
This story is about two armies each announcing on the same day that they had taken villages in eastern Ukraine.
How it got here. Russia's war on Ukraine began in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and armed separatists seized parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, together called the Donbas. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. In September 2022 Moscow declared four Ukrainian regions, Donetsk among them, part of Russia. Almost no country recognises that; under international law the land is Ukraine's, and the parts Russia holds are occupied. Russia calls occupied Donetsk region the 'DNR', or 'Donetsk People's Republic'.
The town of Lyman, in northern Donetsk region, was taken by Russia in May 2022 and retaken by Ukraine that October. It has been near the front ever since. Dobropillia is a town further south-west in the same region.
The actors. Russia's defence ministry issues a daily list of places it says its forces have taken; Russian state and private outlets carry it. Ukraine's Third Army Corps, commanded by Andriy Biletskyi, is fighting on the Lyman axis. According to Espreso TV, it has named its offensive there 'Vivaldi', after the four seasons.
What is at stake. Moscow has said it wants all of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Each village either side takes changes how close that is. Each claim is also a message to the other side, to allies and to any talks.
Where it stands. Both militaries say they are advancing. Territory claimed is not territory held, and no outside source in the reporting we hold has checked either claim.
