Rzeczpospolita says a flock of birds, Digi24 says a possible drone

Vilnius airport stopped take-offs and landings on Sunday and NATO put a fighter up. Two of the three reports we hold say the object was birds; the third stops at a possible sighting.

What all three carry. Lithuania halted flights at its main airport on Sunday and a NATO fighter went up over a reported drone. Two of the three reports we hold state it directly; none disputes it.

What gets measured. El Mundo measures the night by how far the warning reached: a yellow air alert to every mobile phone in the Vilnius, Trakai and Elektrėnai districts. Digi24 is the only one of the three to name the body that reported the sighting.

Not settled. No report we hold says how long the airport stayed shut, how many flights were delayed, or how many people were held up. Digi24 says NATO mobilised "at least one" fighter; Rzeczpospolita says one. Only El Mundo mentions the phone alert and the three districts, and only El Mundo splits the night into two incidents rather than one. Nobody at the airport is quoted.

What this is about. On Sunday 13 September, Lithuania shut its main airport in Vilnius and a NATO fighter took off because something unidentified was reported in the sky. This happened in a region where such alarms have become common.

How it got here. - Lithuania joined both NATO and the European Union in 2004. It borders Belarus, a close ally of Moscow, and Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave on the Baltic. Vilnius sits only a short distance from the Belarusian border. - Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then, NATO's eastern members have treated their airspace as a front line. - In September 2025, drones entered Polish airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine. Poland and NATO said they were Russian; Moscow denied targeting Poland. NATO then strengthened its eastern air defences. - In late 2025, balloons floating in from Belarus shut Vilnius airport several times. Lithuanian officials said smugglers were using them and called it a hybrid attack by Minsk. Belarus rejected that. - Digi24 notes that Lithuania "has faced repeated drone incursions".

Who is involved. - Lithuania's government and its national crisis management centre decide when to close the airport and when to warn the public. - NATO guards the Baltic sky. Lithuania has no fighter jets of its own, so allied air forces take turns flying from bases in the region under the Baltic Air Policing mission. - Airlines and passengers bear the cost of every closure.

What is at stake. Each alarm forces a choice. If officials react to a flock of birds, flights are grounded and the public is frightened for nothing. If they ignore a real drone near a capital's airport, the risk falls on aircraft and people on the ground. Each false alarm also shows a hostile watcher how quickly the defences respond.

Where it stands. Rzeczpospolita reports that Lithuania said the object was a flock of birds. The three reports we hold do not say whether flights have returned to normal. We could not read the Lithuanian press.
