Rzeczpospolita's headline detains two men. Wyborcza, quoting the police, counts one.
Police say they detained Roman Ż. in Silesia on Saturday afternoon and seized valuable watches and Zondacrypto papers. Both Polish papers we hold carry that, in the same words. Only Rzeczpospolita adds a second man — Jarosław S., the sitting marshal of Lubelskie province — and its own body sources him to TVN24, not to the prosecutors it quotes at length.
What both reports carry. Cybercrime officers and Silesian police detained Roman Ż. in Silesia on Saturday afternoon and seized valuable watches and Zondacrypto papers. Both papers print the same police wording. Only Rzeczpospolita adds the Prosecutor General's spokeswoman, Anna Adamiak, who gives flight risk as the reason and says he will be charged in Katowice.
Where they part.
| Reported by | Who was detained | On whose word |
|---|---|---|
| Gazeta Wyborcza | Roman Ż. only | the police |
| Rzeczpospolita, headline | Roman Ż. and Jarosław S., marshal of Lubelskie | none given |
| Rzeczpospolita, body | Roman Ż. | the police, and Anna Adamiak |
| Rzeczpospolita, body | Jarosław S. | TVN24 |
The allegation behind the second name is Rzeczpospolita's own. It says the marshal put hundreds of thousands of złoty into Zondacrypto tokens and, on its sources, lobbied the exchange's chief Przemysław Kral to rescue his money. No prosecutor quoted in either report names him. Jan Grabiec, head of the prime minister's chancellery, told TVN24 that more would be known in "a matter of hours and the coming days".
What the coverage does not settle. Whether a second man was detained at all. Our two independent readings agree on every count they share and split only on where the asymmetry sits: one in the verbs, one in the headline. Neither paper carries the other's account, and between them they give the several thousand people who filed complaints one line.
What this is about. Polish prosecutors are investigating the collapse of Zondacrypto, a Polish cryptocurrency exchange, and whether people with political or social standing used their influence to get their own money out before other customers.
How it got here.
- March 2022. Sylwester Suszek disappears. He had run the exchange. He was last seen at a petrol station owned by a man Rzeczpospolita names as Marian W., known as "Maniek". Przemysław Kral succeeded Suszek at the top of the business.
- April 2026. The Regional Prosecutor's Office in Katowice opens an investigation into large-scale fraud and money laundering. Rzeczpospolita reports that several thousand people have filed criminal complaints.
- August 2026. Prosecutors merge the Zondacrypto case with the investigation into Suszek's disappearance. At the end of the month, media report that Kral is cooperating with prosecutors to seek a reduced sentence. Polish law allows this for a suspect who helps convict others.
- The week before this story. Radosław Piesiewicz, president of the Polish Olympic Committee, is detained and held in custody. He is charged with paid influence-peddling and with paying some creditors at the expense of others. He denies it. Three more people are detained on the Wednesday and remanded on the Friday.
Who is involved, and why.
- The prosecution service. It runs the case from Katowice. In Poland the Prosecutor General is also the Minister of Justice, so the office sits inside the government.
- The government. A coalition led by Donald Tusk has governed since December 2023, when it replaced Law and Justice (PiS) after eight years in power. Jan Grabiec, head of the prime minister's chancellery, is speaking for it.
- Jarosław S. A PiS politician and former member of parliament. As marshal of Lubelskie he heads the regional executive of one of Poland's sixteen provinces.
- The customers. They are the people who filed the complaints.
What is at stake. For the customers, whether any money comes back. Kral's lawyer says Kral has put assets at prosecutors' disposal. For politics, whether the case now reaches a senior opposition office-holder.
Where it stands. No charges against the marshal appear in either report.
What is being argued about
- Was a second man detained at all? One report says so; no prosecutor in either report confirms it.
- Whether a headline may state as fact what its own body attributes to another broadcaster.
- What the marshal is suspected of, if anything — neither report names a charge against him.
- The several thousand people who filed criminal complaints, who appear once across both reports.
