Shargh says a US drone was destroyed "over the Strait of Hormuz"; LBCI, citing Reuters, says over Bandar Abbas, and no American confirmation
Two reports, both tracing back to one Iranian army statement, put the same MQ-1 in two different places. Neither carries an American source.
One drone, two places. Shargh, a Tehran daily, reports that an MQ-1 was "identified and targeted" over the Strait of Hormuz by the south-eastern air defence forces of the Iranian army. LBCI in Lebanon carries Reuters carrying Iranian state media carrying the army — and puts the drone over Bandar Abbas.
The gap is in one headline. LBCI's headline ends by saying that no American confirmation has been issued. Shargh names no source at all, and its headline says the drone was destroyed where its own sentence says only that it was targeted.
| Shargh | LBCI, citing Reuters | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | over the Strait of Hormuz | over Bandar Abbas |
| Who it credits | no source named | Iranian state media, citing the army |
| What became of the drone | "destroyed" in the headline, "targeted" in the text | shot down |
| American word | not mentioned | none issued |
Two reports are not two observations. Both accounts come from the Iranian military. The distance between the strait and the port is a difference in the telling, not two sightings.
Not settled. Whether an American drone was hit at all. Where, if it was. Whether the United States lost an aircraft. We hold no American account of this and no independent one, and no report we hold quotes anyone outside Iran's armed forces.
What this is about: Iran's army says it hit an American drone near the Strait of Hormuz. The United States has not said whether it lost one.
The place. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow sea lane between Iran and Oman. It links the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is one of the world's main routes for oil and gas. Bandar Abbas is Iran's main port on the strait and a base for its navy. The two places named in the reports are close, but one is a sea lane and the other is an Iranian city.
How it got here. - 1979: Iran's revolution ended its alliance with Washington. The two have had no diplomatic relations since 1980. - 2018: The United States left the 2015 nuclear deal and brought back sanctions. - June 2019: Iran shot down a US Navy Global Hawk drone near the strait. Iran said it was over Iranian territory. Washington said it was over international waters. That dispute was never settled. - 7 October 2023: Hamas attacked Israel, and war in Gaza followed. Iran and Israel then attacked each other directly for the first time, in April and October 2024. - June 2025: Israel and Iran fought a 12-day war. The United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites during it. - This month: our earlier coverage carried Israeli operations in south Lebanon and a Saudi account of fighting with Yemen's Houthis.
The actors. - Iran's regular army (the Artesh) runs part of the country's air defence. It is separate from the Revolutionary Guard. - The United States keeps naval and air forces in the Gulf. Its Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain. - MQ-1 is the Predator family of drones. The US Air Force retired the Predator in 2018. The US Army flies a descendant, the MQ-1C Gray Eagle.
What is at stake. In 2019 a drone shot down over this water took the two countries close to open conflict. A confirmed shootdown would raise the risk again. A shootdown that is never confirmed would still show what Iran's military wants people to believe.
Where it stands. The only account comes from Iran's army. We hold no American or independent report.
The story so far
- Riyadh says 73 civilians wounded; the parliament in Sanaa condemns "Saudi crimes" · 8 Sep 2026
- Israel's military says it took the Ali Taher Ridge. The one Lebanese account we hold is two days older and names no ridge. · 4 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- Where the drone is said to have been hit — the strait, or the port of Bandar Abbas
- One military statement, relayed two ways
- The absence of any American account
