Six reports name 'the co-pilot', three say 'a pilot'; Israeli ministers say 'terrorist', Libération says the circumstances 'remain to be established'
A Flydubai jet from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a knife attack in the cockpit. Across fifteen European reports, who attacked, whether it was terrorism, which day it happened and how many Israelis were aboard are all told differently. Nearly every account traces back to Israeli officials or Israeli media.
What the reports agree on. Flight FZ1073 left Dubai for Tel Aviv, NOS reports. It dived sharply over Saudi Arabia and landed at Tabuk. Every report that describes the cockpit says one pilot was stabbed. Passengers and off-duty pilots then took control.
Where they split.
| Question | One account | The other |
|---|---|---|
| Who attacked | 'the co-pilot': NOS, De Standaard, De Telegraaf, iDNES, HotNews; Telex says he 'may have' | 'a pilot': Welt, Dagens Nyheter, taz |
| Terrorism? | Stated as fact by Israel Katz (Dagens Nyheter), Itamar Ben-Gvir (Efimerida ton Syntakton) and an unnamed official (De Telegraaf) | 'circumstances remain to be established' (Libération); security services have drawn no public conclusions (NOS) |
| Which day | 'Monday' (De Telegraaf) | 'Wednesday' (Libération, Le Figaro, HotNews) |
| Israelis aboard | about 180 (taz, Efimerida ton Syntakton) | about 150 (NOS); 'dozens' (De Standaard) |
The sourcing. Nearly every account rests on Israeli officials, Israeli media or passenger videos. Le Figaro is the only report that quotes the airline, and Flydubai calls it an 'incident'. No report names the captain or the man accused.
What is not settled. Whether this was an attempt to crash the plane. Who the attacker is: NOS says Israeli media report he is from Oman, and that this is not confirmed. What Saudi or Emirati investigators have found. We hold nothing from either country's authorities.
What this is about. A passenger jet flying from Dubai to Israel made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a fight in its cockpit. Israeli ministers call it terrorism. Investigators have not said so.
How it got here. Flydubai is a low-cost airline owned by the government of Dubai, one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. For decades most Arab states did not recognise Israel, and there were no direct flights. That changed with the Abraham Accords, signed on 15 September 2020. The UAE and Bahrain normalised relations with Israel, and flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv began soon after. Saudi Arabia has no diplomatic relations with Israel. Since 2022, though, it has let airlines bound for Israel cross its airspace, and that is why this flight was over Saudi territory. Since the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza that followed, Israeli authorities have treated threats to Israelis abroad as a security matter. That is the lens through which the first accounts were given.
The actors. Israel's government speaks for the passengers, most of whom were Israeli: the defence minister, Israel Katz, and the minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Flydubai and the UAE are responsible for the aircraft and its crew. Saudi Arabia owns the airport at Tabuk, in its north-west, where the plane landed and where both pilots were taken to hospital, according to the airport's statement reported by NOS.
What is at stake. If a pilot deliberately tried to crash an airliner, questions follow about how Gulf carriers vet their crews. They could also touch the air links built since 2020. If it was not deliberate, the early terror framing will have run ahead of the evidence.
Where it stands. All passengers are reported safe except the stabbed captain. The attacker is in custody. No investigating authority has published findings.
What is being argued about
- Whether the attacker was 'the co-pilot' or 'a pilot', and who he is
- Whether the stabbing was a terrorist attempt to crash the plane, as Israeli ministers say
- Which day it happened, and how many Israelis were aboard
- How far the accounts rest on Israeli officials and Israeli media alone
