Suspilne: 'occupiers' jailed a Crimean for 'treason', in quotation marks. Vedomosti: 16 years for state treason, stated flat
A man from Simeiz in Crimea has been sentenced to 16 years in a penal colony. Suspilne, in Ukraine, and Vedomosti, in Russia, agree on the sentence. They use opposite words for the court and the charge, and we hold only one account of what he is said to have done.
The sentence. Suspilne and Vedomosti both report that a court in Crimea sentenced a man from Simeiz to 16 years in a penal colony. Suspilne gives his age as 33. The two outlets agree on the length of the sentence. They do not agree on what to call the court or the charge.
| Suspilne (Ukraine) | Vedomosti (Russia) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who passed sentence | "Occupiers"; "a Russian court in occupied Crimea" | No court named |
| The charge | «держзраді», "treason", in quotation marks | «госизмену», "state treason", stated flat |
| What he is said to have done | Photographed a Black Sea Fleet warship, "according to the occupation prosecutor" | Not in the headline we hold |
| The man's name | Not given | Not given |
The words. Suspilne presents the charge as the Russian authorities' version. Vedomosti's headline presents it as the offence. One of the two reports names who passed sentence. The other says only that a Crimea resident was sentenced.
The grounds. Only Suspilne gives them, and it credits them to the prosecution. We hold Vedomosti's headline but not its article, so we cannot say whether Vedomosti gives the same grounds.
What is not settled - Whether a photograph was the whole case. The only account of it is the prosecution's, as Suspilne relays it. - Which court passed sentence, and when. Neither report says. - Who the man is, whether he had a lawyer of his choosing and whether he will appeal. Neither report says.
What this is about. A man living in Crimea has been convicted of betraying Russia, in a place that most of the world treats as part of Ukraine.
How it got here. Crimea is a peninsula on the Black Sea. It was part of independent Ukraine from 1991. In February 2014 President Viktor Yanukovych fled Kyiv after months of protests. Russian forces then took control of Crimea, and in March 2014 Russia annexed it after a referendum that Ukraine and most states reject. That month the UN General Assembly passed a resolution affirming Ukraine's territorial integrity. Fighting began in eastern Ukraine the same year. On 24 February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion, and the war is still being fought.
Who the actors are. Russia governs Crimea and applies its own laws there, including its criminal code and its treason article. Russia's Black Sea Fleet is based in Sevastopol, so its warships are a military target in the war. Ukraine regards Crimea as occupied territory and its people as Ukrainian citizens. Simeiz is a small resort town on the peninsula's southern coast.
What is at stake. Treason means betraying your own state. Moscow treats Crimeans as Russian citizens who owe allegiance to Russia. Kyiv, and the international law of occupation as most states read it, holds that an occupying power may not demand allegiance from the people it occupies. Each treason conviction in Crimea therefore also makes a claim about whose citizens those people are. Russia's position is that it is enforcing its law. Ukraine's position is that residents of an occupied territory are being prosecuted under a foreign law.
Where it stands. The reports we hold record one sentence handed down on 30 September 2026. They give no name, no court and no information on an appeal.
What is being argued about
- Whether the court is a Russian court or an occupation court
- Whether 'treason' is the offence or the prosecution's word
- What the man is said to have done: photograph a Black Sea Fleet warship
- Who the man is: neither report names him
