Suspilne says Zelensky 'supported Trump'; Censor.NET says he answered with terms
Trump wrote that Russia has 'lost control' of its diesel industry because its refineries were 'blown up'. Six reports in five languages carry it. They split on who did the damage and on whether Zelensky backed Trump or set conditions.
What Trump wrote. On 21 September Trump wrote on Truth Social that Russia had "lost control" of its diesel industry. Many diesel-producing refineries were "blown up" and out of service, "at least temporarily", Espreso TV and An-Nahar report. He called for the war to end. He meets Zelensky in New York on 22 September.
Who blew them up. Trump's words, as Espreso TV and An-Nahar carry them, name no actor. Meduza names "Ukrainian strikes" in its own voice. Shargh says Trump himself blamed Ukrainian attacks.
What Zelensky did. His condition: Russia stops targeting Ukraine's energy, critical infrastructure and food exports. Ukraine then takes matching steps.
| Outlet | How it frames Zelensky's reply | Carries the condition? |
|---|---|---|
| Suspilne | "supported Trump" | No |
| An-Nahar | replied "at once", "in support" | Yes |
| Espreso TV | Ukraine "ready for de-escalation" | Yes |
| Censor.NET | "answered Trump" | Yes, in the headline |
What Trump said was lost. Meduza and Espreso TV's headline say oil refining. An-Nahar and Trump's words as quoted say diesel.
What is not settled - The toll. Only Espreso TV carries Trump's "25 thousand people killed every month, mostly soldiers". It gives no source and no split by side. - How many refineries are down, and for how long. No report gives a number. - What Ukraine's "matching" steps would be. Zelensky's post, as carried, does not say. - Moscow's answer. We hold no Russian response.
This story is about whether Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries have become a bargaining chip in a war the US president says he wants ended.
How it got here. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and backed armed separatists in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region. On 24 February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then Russia has struck Ukraine's power grid, ports and grain-export routes again and again. Ukraine had far fewer ways to reach Russian territory, so it built long-range drones and turned them on Russian oil refineries and fuel depots. Oil and fuel sales are among the Russian state's largest sources of revenue. That is why both sides treat energy as a front.
Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 promising to end the war quickly. His administration has since talked to both governments. A US-brokered pause on strikes against energy targets in March 2025 did not hold; each side accused the other of breaking it.
The actors. - Russia, the invading state, led by President Vladimir Putin. - Ukraine, the invaded state, led by President Volodymyr Zelensky since 2019. - The United States, Ukraine's main military backer since 2022, which under Trump casts itself as a broker between the two. - The UN General Assembly, whose annual meeting of world leaders in New York each September is where many such talks happen on the sidelines.
What is at stake. If Russia's fuel output is badly hurt, its war economy and its export earnings suffer. Zelensky's offer would link an end to Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy and food exports to steps by Ukraine in return. He has not said what those steps would be.
Where it stands. Trump and Zelensky are due to meet in New York on 22 September, on the sidelines of the General Assembly. Zelensky says the de-escalation ideas will be discussed there. We hold no response from Moscow.
What is being argued about
- Trump says Russia has 'lost control' of its diesel industry after refineries were 'blown up'
- Two reports name Ukraine as the striker; Trump's words as carried name no one
- Zelensky offers matching de-escalation if Russia stops hitting Ukraine's energy and food exports
- Suspilne's headline says he 'supported Trump' and leaves the condition out
