taz: SPD keeps its talks on a government without the AfD after the CDU says no. Der Freitag: an employer expects 'ghetto-like conditions'
The AfD has won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt. Three German reports on the day after tell three different stories: coalition arithmetic, an employer's fears for his staff, and an arts foundation bracing for pressure. None of them quotes anyone from the AfD.
Three reports, three stories. We hold three German reports from 24 September on what follows the AfD's win. Each tells a different story.
| Outlet | What it reports | Whose voice |
|---|---|---|
| taz | The SPD invites parties to talks on "eine Regierung ohne AfD". The meeting goes ahead "obwohl die CDU abgesagt hat" | SPD, CDU as actors |
| Der Freitag | Magdeburg painter Ulrich Temps: "Ich gehe davon aus, dass ghettoähnliche Zustände entstehen" | An employer |
| Welt | Manon Bursian, director of the state's arts foundation: "Vorauseilende Anpassung kommt für uns nicht infrage" | A foundation director |
Only taz has the coalition story. It says the SPD's talks are going ahead even though the CDU declined. No other report we hold confirms this.
Two of three are warnings. Der Freitag says Temps's Magdeburg staff are about one-third migrant-background, and his apprentices more than 40 percent. Those are his figures. Welt's summary speaks of "bekannte Mechanismen der Diffamierung" (familiar methods of defamation) without saying who uses them.
Missing voice. All three reports are about the AfD. None quotes it, and none gives its share of the vote.
Not settled - Whether any government without the AfD has the numbers. None of the three reports gives seat counts. - Why the CDU declined, and whether that is final. taz reports only that it did. - What the AfD plans to do on culture or migration in the state, beyond its campaign slogan.
What this is about: who will govern Saxony-Anhalt, an eastern German state, now that the AfD has won its state election.
How it got here. Saxony-Anhalt was formed when Germany reunified in 1990. Its capital is Magdeburg. Germany's 16 states elect their own parliaments. Those parliaments choose the state premier and control policing, schools and culture. Since 2021 the state has been run by a coalition of the CDU, the SPD and the liberal FDP.
The AfD (Alternative for Germany) was founded in 2013 as a party against the euro. It then moved to campaigning on migration and grew strongest in the former East German states. In 2023 Saxony-Anhalt's domestic intelligence office classed the state AfD as a confirmed right-wing extremist organisation. The AfD disputes that label. In 2024 the AfD came first in Thuringia, but the other parties kept it out of government. Der Freitag says the AfD fought this campaign on an „Abschiebe- und Remigrationsoffensive" (an offensive on deportation and "remigration").
The actors. The CDU is the centre-right party of the state's current premier. A 2018 party-congress decision rules out coalitions with the AfD. The SPD is the centre-left junior partner, and taz reports that it is now calling for talks. Employers and cultural bodies speak in the Der Freitag and Welt reports because state policy reaches them directly. The Bauhaus design school worked in Dessau, in this state, from 1925.
What is at stake. Parties that refuse to govern with the AfD must build a majority without it. That is harder with every seat it wins. If they fail, the state faces a minority government or a party breaking its word.
Where it stands. taz reports that the SPD's talks will go ahead even though the CDU has declined. None of the reports we hold says what happens next.
What is being argued about
- Whether the SPD can build a government without the AfD after the CDU declined its talks
- A Magdeburg employer's fears for his migrant-background staff and apprentices
- An arts foundation's refusal to adapt in advance to political pressure
- Why none of the three reports quotes the AfD itself
