Telex counts 30,000 pages; Magyar Nemzet says Péter Magyar "will have plenty to read"
Two Hungarian reports cover the same delivery of documents from central bank governor Mihály Varga to a parliamentary inquiry. One gives the page count and says what the papers cover; the other gives the bank's pledge and names the opposition leader who will have to read them.
What happened. Mihály Varga, governor of the Hungarian National Bank, announced on 17 September that a further batch of documents had gone to the parliamentary inquiry committee. We hold two reports on it. They do not carry the same story.
Where they differ.
| Telex | Magyar Nemzet | |
|---|---|---|
| Published, 17 Sep | 12:25 | 12:58 |
| How much | "újabb 30 ezer oldalnyi dokumentumot" — a further 30,000 pages | no figure given |
| What the papers cover | foundations created under former governor György Matolcsy, transfers of assets to them, and how that money was used | not stated |
| Whom the report addresses | the inquiry committee | Péter Magyar — "lesz mit olvasnia Magyar Péternek" |
| The bank's own words | not carried | "elkötelezettek a törvényes és átlátható működés mellett" — committed to lawful and transparent operation |
What both do. Both take the governor's announcement as the event. Neither quotes the committee that asked for the papers. Only one names the former governor whose term they cover.
Not settled. Both accounts rest on the same announcement, so this is one source and not two. We hold nothing saying what the documents show, what share of the requested material 30,000 pages is, what the committee is looking for, or when it reports. No report we hold carries a word from Matolcsy, from the committee, or from Péter Magyar himself.
This is a fight over documents from Hungary's central bank, and over who looks worse when they arrive.
How it got here. The Magyar Nemzeti Bank is Hungary's central bank: it sets monetary policy, issues the forint and supervises the financial sector, and it answers to the National Assembly rather than to the government of the day. György Matolcsy, a former economy minister and an ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, ran it from 2013 until his term ended in 2025. During those years the bank set up and funded a group of foundations with central bank money — the arrangement at the centre of today's reporting, which Telex describes as covering foundations created during Matolcsy's time in office, transfers of assets to them, and how that money was used. Mihály Varga, finance minister for most of the same period, succeeded him as governor. The National Assembly can set up an inquiry committee of MPs to examine a matter and call for papers; it cannot charge anyone, and its weapon is publication.
Who is in it. Varga, who holds the documents and is sending them. Matolcsy, whose tenure they cover, and who is quoted nowhere in what we hold. The committee, which asked for the papers. And Péter Magyar, the opposition leader Magyar Nemzet puts in its headline as the man who will have to read them — which is why one of the two reports treats a delivery of paperwork as a story about him.
What is at stake. If the papers show money moving in ways that were not authorised, the inquiry becomes a campaign issue; if they show nothing, the opposition has spent its time on a filing cabinet. Either way it lands in front of voters, because the committee is sitting we hold-up to a national election.
Where it stands. The pages have been sent. Nobody in the reporting we hold has read them.
What is being argued about
- A further delivery of central bank documents to a Hungarian parliamentary inquiry
- Foundations set up under former governor György Matolcsy, and what was done with their assets
- Two reports, one source: both rest on the governor's own announcement
- Whether the handover is reported as evidence or as an embarrassment for the opposition
