Telex says Orbán's prison remark contradicts Fidesz's defence of Hankó; Magyar Nemzet says it matches the party line
Viktor Orbán said Balázs Hankó is in custody because he refused grants to liberal artists. Telex sets that against earlier denials by Hankó and Tamás Deutsch. Magyar Nemzet's headline says Fidesz's spokesman "again put Péter Magyar in his place".
What Orbán said. At a Saturday stop on his tour of the country, Viktor Orbán said "Pest liberals" want to show that a culture minister who refused them grants "must end up in prison". "That is why Hankó is in prison," Telex quotes him. Magyar Nemzet does not dispute the words.
Two readings of one speech.
| Telex | Magyar Nemzet | |
|---|---|---|
| Verdict | Fidesz's account "got into some contradiction" | The spokesman "again put Péter Magyar in his place" |
| Set against Orbán | Hankó on HírTV; Tamás Deutsch to Telex | No one |
| Whose voice | The report's own | The headline's own |
| People quoted | Orbán, Deutsch, Havasi, Magyar | None |
The charge. Before his arrest, Hankó told HírTV that grants carried no condition of political affiliation, Telex reports. Deutsch told Telex that artists who agitated against Orbán received "tens and hundreds of millions of forints". Péter Magyar wrote on Facebook that Orbán had "brought down" Hankó's defence.
The defence. Fidesz press chief Bertalan Havasi told the state news agency MTI that Orbán's words match a statement from the Fidesz presidium a week earlier. That statement called the case the "revenge of the inner-Pest cultural elite". Magyar Nemzet says Magyar "had not read" it.
What is not settled - Whether grants were awarded on party lines. No court has ruled; Hankó is held on suspicion. - The 17 billion forint total. It comes only from Magyar's post, and we hold no official figure. - Why Deutsch and Hankó said otherwise. Telex notes that Havasi did not address it.
This story is about whether Fidesz, now out of government, tells one consistent story about why its former culture minister is in custody.
How it got here. Fidesz governed Hungary from 2010, with Viktor Orbán as prime minister, until the parliamentary election of April 2026. Tisza won it. Its leader, Péter Magyar, broke with Fidesz in 2024 and campaigned against corruption under Orbán's governments.
Balázs Hankó was culture and innovation minister in Orbán's last government. His ministry handed out state grants to artists and cultural groups. He is now in pre-trial detention, which in Hungary a court orders. Telex reports he is suspected of helping to award several hundred grants that in reality paid for either Fidesz's campaign or the private lives of the people who received them.
Who is involved. - Viktor Orbán leads Fidesz, now in opposition, and is touring the country. - Balázs Hankó is the suspect. Before his arrest he said grants were not tied to politics. - Tamás Deutsch, a Fidesz member of the European Parliament, said Orbán's critics were well funded too. - Bertalan Havasi is Fidesz's press chief. - Péter Magyar leads Tisza and the new government.
What is at stake. Fidesz has offered two defences. One says Hankó funded everyone, critics included. The other, in Orbán's words and the presidium's statement, says he refused liberal artists and is being punished for it. The suspicion, as Telex reports it, concerns money that went to a campaign or to private use. It is not about which artists were turned down. Which defence Fidesz keeps will shape how it fights a case it calls political score-settling.
Where it stands. Hankó remains in custody. No report we hold mentions a charge or a trial date.
What is being argued about
- Orbán says Hankó is in prison for refusing grants to liberal artists
- Hankó and Deutsch had earlier said grants were not tied to politics
- Fidesz says Orbán only repeated the party's statement of a week earlier
- A 17 billion forint total that only Péter Magyar cites
