The Hill says two deaths were left off the Pentagon's count on unrelated missions; Mother Jones calls it a cover-up
Three US outlets say the Pentagon's public count of service members who died during the Iran war is short. They disagree on how many deaths are missing and on why. We hold no response from the Pentagon.
What all three say. The Washington Post, Mother Jones and The Hill all say that more US service members died in the Middle East during the war with Iran than the Pentagon's public count shows. The Post says so in its headline. Mother Jones says it rests on the Post's report, which cites "six US officials with knowledge of internal Defense Department data".
Where they split.
| Outlet | How many left out | Why, in its words |
|---|---|---|
| The Washington Post | "more", no number in the text we hold | not in the text we hold |
| Mother Jones | "more", hedged with "reportedly" | "cover-up around disastrous military failures", in its own voice |
| The Hill | two | "missions unrelated to the conflict" |
One name. Only The Hill names anyone who died. It names Maj. Sorffly Davius of the 42nd Infantry Division, who died of "undetermined causes" at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, in March.
Sourcing. These are not three separate confirmations. Mother Jones relays the Post. We cannot tell whether The Hill confirmed the count on its own.
What is not settled. - The total number of deaths left out. The Hill says two. The Post and Mother Jones do not give a number in the text we hold. - Whether the missing deaths are linked to the fighting. The Hill says they are not. Mother Jones says they are evidence of failures in the war. - What the Pentagon says. We hold no statement from it. - We hold only the opening of the Post's report.
What this is about. Whether the US government's public count of American service members who died during its war with Iran includes everyone who died.
How it got here. Iran and Israel have been escalating since the war in Gaza that followed the Hamas-led attacks on Israel of 7 October 2023. The United States was drawn in through its commitments to Israel and its bases across the Gulf. In June 2025, during a short war between Israel and Iran, US aircraft struck Iranian nuclear sites. The reports we hold describe the war with Iran as ongoing. We hold no report in this story on how the current fighting began, so we do not describe it here.
Who is involved. - The Defense Department runs the armed forces. It publishes the names and numbers of service members who die. That list is how the public and Congress keep track of what a war costs in American lives. - Service members based across the Gulf. Camp Buehring in Kuwait is a US Army staging base for forces in the region. The 42nd Infantry Division is a New York Army National Guard division. Part-time soldiers from that division are sent on active deployments. - Congress holds the power to declare war and to fund it. It depends on the Pentagon's figures to oversee a war.
What is at stake. The dispute is over what the count includes. A service member can die in the war zone without dying in the fighting, for example in an accident or of an illness. Whether those deaths go in the count changes the total. If the deaths left out were linked to the war, the public figure understates what the war has cost. If they were not, the question is whether the count's rules were stated anywhere readers could see them.
Where it stands. On 18 September, the Washington Post reported that more troops have died than the Pentagon has disclosed. Mother Jones and The Hill followed later the same day. We hold no response from the Pentagon.
What is being argued about
- How many service member deaths are missing from the Pentagon's public count
- Whether the missing deaths were connected to the fighting with Iran
- Whether one outlet's reporting confirms another's or only repeats it
- A major who died of undetermined causes at a base in Kuwait
