The Jerusalem Post says an "outlawed group" attacked; Asharq Al-Awsat says Syria's forces were the ones raiding

Two reports, three hours apart, give the same three dead security men in the Daraa countryside and reverse who was attacking whom. Neither names any of the three.

Geopolitics & international affairs Syria

Three dead, agreed. Three members of Syria's security forces were killed in the Daraa countryside, in the south of the country. Both reports we hold carry that figure, and neither disputes it.

Who attacked whom, not agreed. The two accounts put the same deaths in opposite sentences.

The Jerusalem Post Asharq Al-Awsat
Headline "Three members of Syria's security forces killed in southern Syria attack by outlawed group" "Raid on ISIS Site in Daraa Countryside Leaves 3 Syrian Security Personnel Dead"
Who is acting an "outlawed group" Syria's security forces
The enemy not identified named as ISIS
Account attributed to a source no no

One report contradicts its own headline. The Jerusalem Post names an attacker above the story, then says in the body: "It remains unclear who the perpetrators were in the clash in southern Syria." Its one other sentence leaves Daraa for Quneitra, where, it says, "locals complain of weekly IDF raids and shelling" — carried as a complaint, not as an event.

Not settled. Whether the three died under attack or while attacking. Who the "outlawed group" is. Whether ISIS was involved at all: one report names it, and names an ISIS site as the target rather than ISIS as the killer. We hold no claim of responsibility, no statement from the Syrian government, and no quotation from anyone named as present. Neither report gives a name, an age or a home town for any of the three dead.

What this is about. Three men in Syria's security forces were killed in the countryside of Daraa province, in the south, and the two reports we hold cannot agree on whether they were ambushed or were the ones attacking.

How it got here. Syria's war began in Daraa in March 2011, with protests that Bashar al-Assad's government met with force. ISIS declared a caliphate across eastern Syria and western Iraq in 2014, lost the last of its territory at Baghouz in March 2019, and has since operated as an underground insurgency of cells, ambushes and roadside bombs rather than a force holding ground. Assad's army retook Daraa in 2018 under a Russian-brokered surrender that left many local fighters in place with their weapons — one reason an armed group in that province can be hard to identify. In December 2024 a rebel offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham took Damascus and Assad fled to Russia; Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led it, was made president in January 2025. The new government has been building a national police and army out of former rebel factions and pushing them into provinces the movement never governed. Daraa is one of them.

The actors. Syria's security forces are the post-Assad government's own men. ISIS is named by one report only. Israel enters through the Jerusalem Post's report alone: Quneitra sits beside the Golan Heights, which Israel seized in 1967 and annexed in 1981, and Israeli forces moved into the adjacent buffer zone after Assad fell.

What is at stake. If an unidentified group ambushed a patrol, the government does not control the south. If its own men walked into fire while raiding an ISIS position, it is taking the south back and paying for it. The same three dead, opposite readings of who holds Daraa.

Where it stands. Three counted, none named, and nobody claiming them.

What is being argued about

  • Three members of Syria's security forces were killed in the Daraa countryside — both reports give the same figure.
  • Whether the three were ambushed by an armed group or died while raiding one — the two reports reverse the actor.
  • Whether ISIS was responsible — one report names an ISIS site as the target, the other says the perpetrators are unknown.
  • Neither report names any of the dead, quotes anyone, or attributes its account to a source.

Attacked, or attacking

The two reports the desk holds put the same three deaths in opposite sentences: one has the security forces ambushed by an unnamed outlawed group, the other has them raiding an ISIS site. One says outright that the perpetrators are unknown; the other names ISIS in its headline. Neither names any of the three dead.

Nobody in Daraa speaks

No report we hold carries a quotation from the Syrian government, from residents of Daraa, or from anyone named as present. The longer of the two spends its body on Israeli raids near Quneitra rather than on the clash in its own headline. The picture on it is a file photograph from another province, and its caption says so.

disputed The three were killed when they came under attack by an armed group.
The Jerusalem Post frames the deaths as an attack by an outlawed group while itself noting it remains unclear who the perpetrators were; Asharq Al-Awsat frames the same deaths as occurring during a raid on an ISIS site, which makes the security forces the attacking party.

unverified ISIS was responsible for the deaths.
Only Asharq Al-Awsat names ISIS, and its headline places an ISIS site as the target of the raid rather than naming ISIS as the killer; the Jerusalem Post says explicitly that the perpetrators are unclear, and we hold no claim of responsibility.

The only report that says who did it is unknown — "It remains unclear who the perpetrators were" — and the only one that mentions Israeli raids near Quneitra.
It remains unclear who the perpetrators were in the clash in southern Syria. There are tensions closer to Israel in villages near Quneitra, where locals complain of weekly IDF raids and shelling.
Headline against body: the headline names an attacker; the body says nobody knows who it was — “It remains unclear who the perpetrators were in the clash in southern Syria.”
Who is named as acting: the three dead are acted upon in the passive and the attacker is a category rather than a name — “Three members of Syria's security forces killed in southern Syria attack by outlawed group”
Stated or hedged: Israeli raids and shelling are carried as a local complaint, while the Daraa killings are carried as an event — “There are tensions closer to Israel in villages near Quneitra, where locals complain of weekly IDF raids and shelling.”
What the picture shows: the photograph is from a different province five weeks earlier and is labelled illustrative in its own caption — “A member of the Syrian security forces carries a weapon while walking near official vehicles in the Hasakah countryside, northeastern Syria on February 9, 2026; Illustrative.”
Headline claims what the body does not carry: the headline names an attacker the body says is unknown — “It remains unclear who the perpetrators were in the clash in southern Syria.”
Who is named as acting: the dead are the sentence's object; the attacker is an unnamed group — “Three members of Syria's security forces killed in southern Syria attack by outlawed group”
What is hedged: Israeli raids appear only as something residents say, never as an event — “locals complain of weekly IDF raids and shelling”
Picture stands in for the scene: the photograph is from another region seven months earlier and is labelled illustrative — “Hasakah countryside, northeastern Syria on February 9, 2026; Illustrative.”

The only report that names ISIS, and the only one that makes the security forces the raiding party rather than the ambushed.
Internal Security Forces raided a site in the town of Al-Sanamayn in the Daraa countryside on Thursday where an armed group affiliated with ISIS was holed up, after tightening the siege around the group and giving its members a deadline to surrender, which they did not heed. The Internal Security Forces said through their official channels that the security operation in Al-Sanamayn was ongoing, confirming that the outlawed armed group was affiliated with ISIS. The forces said they had tightened the siege around the group and given its members a deadline to surrender, but they did not respond,
Who is named as acting: the same three deaths are written with the security forces as the ones conducting the operation, and the enemy named outright as ISIS — “Raid on ISIS Site in Daraa Countryside Leaves 3 Syrian Security Personnel Dead”
Asserted not attributed: the target is stated flat as an ISIS site and the security forces are the ones raiding — “Raid on ISIS Site in Daraa Countryside Leaves 3 Syrian Security Personnel Dead”
Anyone hurt is counted, not named: three dead given as a figure and a job title — “3 Syrian Security Personnel Dead”
