The Jerusalem Post says 'hijacking', a UAE adviser says 'terrorist act', An-Nahar says 'incident', and no one has shown who, if anyone, sent the co-pilot
On a FlyDubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, the Omani co-pilot stabbed the Indian captain, and the plane landed in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu threatens whoever 'sent' him. He has offered no evidence that anyone did.
What every account agrees on. The co-pilot attacked the captain in the cockpit on Wednesday. Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry says so (via North Press Agency). So does the captain, Smit Machchhar, speaking through the Jerusalem Post, and so do passengers, through An-Nahar. The Boeing 737 carried 174 passengers, An-Nahar says. It landed in Tabuk.
What it is called depends on who is writing.
| Outlet | Word for the event | Motive |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "hijacking" | not stated in headlines |
| Arutz Sheva | "the Flydubai terrorist" | Netanyahu quoted: "came to crash the plane" |
| Haaretz, quoting Gargash | "terrorist act" | "extremism and terrorism" |
| France 24 | "violent clash on board" | "remains unclear" |
| An-Nahar, LBCI | حادثة (incident) | "under investigation" |
Who sent him. Netanyahu says Israel is "investigating whether he was sent". In Arutz Sheva's headline, the "whether" is gone. An-Nahar says he spoke "without providing evidence" that any state was responsible. Of the six reports that carry the threat, three say the motive or the sender is unproven.
How far it fell. An-Nahar cites Flightradar24: 17,000ft in one minute. Al Jazeera says 17,000ft in under two minutes.
What is NOT settled - Why he did it. Netanyahu speaks of "Islamic radicalization". The UAE prosecutor is still checking for any terrorist link. - Whether anyone directed him. - Who he is. No report we hold names the co-pilot.
This story is about a violent attack in the cockpit of a passenger jet flying from Dubai to Israel, and about how governments in the region are now treating it.
How it got here. In September 2020 the United Arab Emirates signed the Abraham Accords and established diplomatic relations with Israel. Direct flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv followed. FlyDubai, a low-cost airline owned by the Dubai government, is one of the carriers on that route. Israel's war in Gaza began after the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023. It strained Israel's ties across the Arab world, but the UAE kept the relationship. Saudi Arabia has no diplomatic relations with Israel. It does let flights to and from Israel cross its airspace, which is why this flight was over Saudi territory. The Jerusalem Post reports that Netanyahu visited the UAE this same week.
The actors. - Israel: the flight's destination. Its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is threatening whoever may be behind the attack. - The UAE: the airline's home. Its prosecutor is investigating, and a senior presidential adviser, Anwar Gargash, has called the attack a terrorist act. - Saudi Arabia: the plane made its emergency landing in Tabuk, in the kingdom's north-west. Its Interior Ministry led the first inquiry, with a UAE security team taking part. - Oman: the co-pilot's country, according to the Jerusalem Post. Oman has no diplomatic relations with Israel. - India: the captain's country.
What is at stake. If investigators find that a state or group directed the attack, Netanyahu's threat puts that party on notice. That could test cooperation between Israel and the Gulf. If he acted alone, the questions shift to how airlines vet their crews. Israel's ambassador to the UAE told the Jerusalem Post the relationship was not weakened.
Where it stands. Both men were flown to the UAE with an Emirati security team. The investigations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia are still open.
