The Jerusalem Post says the IDF killed a Hamas brigade commander; Palestine TV says two citizens were killed
An Israeli outlet and a Palestinian outlet both reported Israeli strikes in Gaza on Tuesday. The Israeli one names a commander and cites the army. The Palestinian one counts two dead and names no one. We cannot tell whether they describe the same strikes.
Two accounts of one day. On Tuesday, The Jerusalem Post and Palestine TV each reported Israeli strikes in Gaza. They describe different dead, and neither mentions the other's.
| The Jerusalem Post | Palestine TV | |
|---|---|---|
| Who was hit | Beik, commander of Hamas's Northern Brigade, and a "top military financer" | "two citizens" in Gaza City and Jabalia |
| Dead named | Beik, by name and rank | none |
| Number of dead | not given | two, plus wounded, not numbered |
| Source named | "according to the IDF" | none in the paragraph we hold |
| Word for a killing | "elimination" (of Beik's predecessor) | "martyrs" |
The Post says the IDF killed Beik. Citing the IDF, it says he took command after his predecessor, Ahmed Ghandour, was killed, and that he had been the brigade's military intelligence chief. A second Post piece, an analysis, says the IDF "will keep killing Hamas commanders as long as terror group keeps controlling Gaza". It calls Hamas a terror group in its own voice.
Palestine TV says Israeli bombardment of several areas killed two people and wounded others. It calls Israel "the occupation". We hold only its first paragraph.
What is not settled - Whether the two outlets describe the same strikes. - Who the two dead were, and who counted them. - Whether Beik is dead. Only the IDF says so, through the Post. - How many people died in all. No report we hold gives a total.
This story is about Israel's continuing strikes in the Gaza Strip, and how an Israeli outlet and a Palestinian outlet describe the same day of them.
How it got here. Gaza is a narrow coastal strip of Palestine, bordered by Israel and Egypt. Hamas, an Islamist movement with an armed wing, has governed it since 2007, when it drove out the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority. On 7 October 2023 Hamas led an attack on southern Israel. Israel answered with a war in Gaza that it said was meant to destroy Hamas. A ceasefire was announced in October 2025. Israeli strikes in Gaza have gone on this month all the same: Reuters photographs carried by The Jerusalem Post show strike damage in Khan Younis on 9 and 23 September.
Who is in it. - The Israeli army (IDF) carries out the strikes and names the people it says it targeted. - Hamas's armed wing is organised in regional brigades. The Northern Brigade covers the north of the Strip. - Gaza City is the Strip's largest city. Jabalia, next to it, is a town and one of Gaza's largest refugee camps. - Palestine TV is the broadcaster of the Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the occupied West Bank from Ramallah but does not govern Gaza.
What is at stake. Each outlet's account decides who the dead were. The Post's analysis argues that Israel will keep targeting Hamas commanders for as long as Hamas controls Gaza. Palestine TV reports the dead as citizens and calls them martyrs. If the two accounts cannot be matched, a reader cannot know whether a strike killed a commander, civilians, or both.
Where it stands. On 29 September both outlets reported strikes in the north of the Strip. Neither names a source for a death toll, and neither mentions the other's dead.

What is being argued about
- Whether the commander the IDF named and Palestine TV's two dead come from the same strikes
- Who counted the dead, and which dead are named
- The words each outlet uses for a killing
- Why the IDF keeps striking commanders of units it has called defeated
