Trump calls Xi talks 'very productive'; a Guardian source says he warned on Iran; Ukrainska Pravda sees 'two pandas instead of a result'
We hold six reports from the last day of Xi Jinping's state visit to Washington. They tell three different stories about what the visit produced, and none of them quotes Xi or any Chinese official.
What happened. The Guardian and the Washington Examiner report that Xi Jinping ended a three-day state visit to Washington on Friday. The day brought tea at the White House and a tour of the National Archives. On Thursday there were talks in the Oval Office and a state dinner.
What it produced depends on who you read.
| Outlet | Leads with | Resting on |
|---|---|---|
| Washington Examiner | a "very productive meeting"; Xi "seemed to like" renaming AI "SUPER INTELLIGENCE" | Trump's Truth Social posts |
| The Independent | Trump "claims" Xi agrees on the AI rename | Trump's account |
| The Guardian | Trump told Xi China helping Iran is "unacceptable" | an unnamed official, in the headline only |
| Ukrainska Pravda | "two pandas instead of a result"; "historic" in quotation marks | headline only |
| New York Times | the bald eagle statue Trump gave Xi | summary only |
| The Insider | CNN and MS NOW refused access to the lunch | headline only |
One voice. Two separate blind readings agree that Xi's views reach readers only as Trump reports them. Not one of the 6 reports quotes Xi or a Chinese official. We hold no report from the Chinese press on the visit.
What is not settled - Whether Iran came up at all. Only the Guardian says so, and the text we hold does not carry the quote. - Whether Xi agreed to anything on AI. Only Trump says he did. - Whether Ukraine came up. Ukrainska Pravda asks, and we hold only its headline. - Who barred CNN and MS NOW. The Insider's headline names no one.
What this is about. China's leader, Xi Jinping, has been on a state visit to Washington. The question is whether it changed anything between the world's two largest economies.
How it got here. Xi has led China's Communist Party since 2012 and has been president since 2013. Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025 for a second term. In his first term he opened a trade war with China through tariffs. Joe Biden, who came next, added controls from 2022 on selling advanced computer chips to China. They were meant to slow China's work on artificial intelligence and weapons. China answered with export controls of its own on critical minerals. That is why AI is on a summit agenda at all: it is where the two governments compete hardest.
The Washington Examiner calls this Xi's second state visit to the United States. It began when Trump met him at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday night.
Who else is in the room. China is a major buyer of Iranian oil and a partner of Russia. The Guardian's live coverage mentions an "Iran war" and says Trump was asked whether progress had been made on it. Ukraine's press watches every US–China meeting for one question. Beijing has kept close ties with Moscow since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Will it be pressed over that war?
What is at stake. If the talks moved Beijing on Iran or Russia, that would matter far beyond trade. If they produced ceremony and little else, the tariffs, the chip controls and the rival alliances stay where they were.
Where it stands. The visit ends on Friday. None of the reports we hold carries a joint statement or a Chinese account of the talks.

- taz calls it “a mistake by an AI”; the Washington Examiner says it was the Pentagon’s “blind faith” in one · 20 Sep 2026
- An AI error 'almost started a war' with China, says The Independent; Frankfurter Allgemeine says it nearly led to action against one ship · 19 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- Did Trump warn Xi over Iran, or did one unnamed official say he did?
- Did Xi agree to anything on AI, or did only Trump say so?
- Why does no report quote Xi or any Chinese official?
- Was Ukraine discussed at all?
