Trump claims 'permanent control' of Greenland's security; Denmark and Greenland say sovereignty stands
Nine outlets in seven countries read one deal three ways: Trump got everything, Trump lost, or NATO won. None of the 11 reports we hold carries the text of the agreement.
The deal. The United States, Denmark and Greenland said on 19 September that they had reached an agreement on the island's security. De Standaard says it widens the US military presence. Der Standard says existing US military powers are extended permanently, even if Greenland becomes independent.
Two readings of one text. Digi24, relaying Reuters, reports both sides:
| Who | What they said |
|---|---|
| Trump | the deal gives Washington "permanent control" over the island's security, without saying what that covers |
| Denmark and Greenland | no agreement puts the island's sovereignty at risk; the deal recognises its "sovereignty and territorial integrity" |
| NATO | it will raise security, stability and cooperation in the Arctic |
Who won. The verdicts point in opposite directions:
| Outlet | Verdict | Whose words |
|---|---|---|
| Welt | "Trump got everything he wanted" | US journalist Erik Kirschbaum |
| Dagens Nyheter | a defeat for Trump; a success for NATO | unnamed Danish commentators; Swedish experts |
| taz | praise and relief all round | the paper's own headline |
| Der Standard | deal done, trust shaken | the paper's own voice |
| Observador | proof the EU "does not have enough strength" | analyst Liliana Reis |
What is not settled. What "permanent control" means in practice. Whether the text says anything about independence beyond Der Standard's account. Three reports say many details are still open. No report we hold quotes a named Greenlandic official. Greenland's position reaches us only in joint statements with Denmark.
What this is about. Who controls the security of Greenland, a vast Arctic island that belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark, and how much of it the United States may run.
How it got here. Greenland was a Danish colony. It gained home rule in 1979 and wider self-government in 2009. The 2009 law recognises its people's right to choose independence. Denmark still handles its defence and foreign policy. The United States has kept a military presence there since the Second World War. A 1951 defence agreement with Denmark lets it run a base in the island's north-west.
Donald Trump first floated buying Greenland in 2019, during his first term. Denmark and Greenland both said it was not for sale. After he returned to office in January 2025 he raised it again and did not rule out pressure to get it. Frankfurter Allgemeine headlines his words: "one way or another we will get it". The paper calls the claim a test for NATO. Denmark and the United States are both founding members of the alliance.
Who is involved. The US government says it wants the island for Arctic security. Efimerida ton Syntakton reports the deal says there will be no Russian or Chinese bases there. Denmark wants to keep the kingdom whole. Greenland's own government wants a say in its future, including a possible independence. The European Union is a bystander: Denmark is a member, but Greenland left the EU's forerunner in 1985.
What is at stake. If the US gains lasting powers that survive independence, as Der Standard reports, Greenland's future choices are narrowed. If the deal holds as Denmark and Greenland describe it, the kingdom's borders are untouched.
Where it stands. An agreement has been announced. None of the reports we hold publishes its text.
What is being argued about
- What Trump's 'permanent control' covers, and whether it survives Greenland's independence
- Whether the deal is a win for Trump, a defeat, or a success for NATO
- Whether trust between Washington and Copenhagen has been lastingly damaged
- Whether the EU carries any weight in Arctic security
