Trump says Iran probably hit the Saudi pipeline, Der Standard says Iraqi militias, Iraqi sources name nobody
Nine reports on a shut pipeline. Two name an attacker, and they name different ones. The Iraqi sources who place drone launch sites inside Iraq name no one at all.
The pipeline stopped. The Jerusalem Post, Rzeczpospolita and Der Standard each report that Saudi Arabia's East–West pipeline halted, and no report we hold says it kept running. None gives a barrel figure, a damage figure or a casualty figure.
Who fired is where the reports split.
| Outlet | Who it names as attacking | Sourced to |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | Iran, "probably" | Trump, speaking to reporters |
| Der Standard | "irakische Milizen" | nobody — stated flat |
| LBCI, from Reuters | nobody | two unnamed Iraqi military sources |
| LBCI, from Al Jazeera | nobody | one unnamed Iraqi security source |
| Shargh | nobody | a named Iraqi border official |
| An-Nahar | nobody | the Lebanese presidency |
The border. Two Iraqi military sources told Reuters the Tayyib area on the Iranian frontier was closed after drone launch sites were found. A security source told Al Jazeera that traces of launches were found near the Dweirij river in Maysan. Shargh carries the Iraqi border official Omar al-Waeli calling the measures at crossings with Iran "موقت" — temporary, for reorganisation — and does not mention drones.
The effect splits too. Der Standard expects fuel prices to rise. Rzeczpospolita leads on Orlen saying its crude deliveries run "bez zakłóceń" — without disruption.
Not settled: who fired, from where, and on whose order. Neither report that names an attacker presents evidence, and no report we hold carries a Saudi, Iranian or Iraqi answer to Trump's remark.
This story is about who attacked Saudi Arabia's main oil pipeline to the Red Sea, and from where.
How it got here. Most Saudi oil leaves by tanker through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway Iran borders. In the 1980s, during the Iran–Iraq war, Saudi Arabia built the East–West pipeline. It carries crude across the kingdom from the eastern oil fields to Yanbu on the Red Sea, so exports can avoid Hormuz.
The pipeline has been hit before. In May 2019 drones struck its pumping stations. Yemen's Houthi movement claimed that attack. In September 2019 the Abqaiq and Khurais oil plants were struck. The Houthis claimed that attack too. The United States and Saudi Arabia blamed Iran, and Iran denied it. Riyadh and Tehran restored diplomatic ties in March 2023, in a deal brokered by China.
The region has become more tense since Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza began. Iran-aligned groups in Iraq launched drones at US forces and at Israel. The Houthis began attacking Red Sea shipping. In June 2025 Israel and Iran fought a short war, and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites.
The actors. - Saudi Arabia owns the pipeline. It needs the pipeline as its route around Hormuz. - Iran is Saudi Arabia's main regional rival. Donald Trump, US president since January 2025, named Iran as the probable attacker. - Iraq's armed groups. Several of them are aligned with Iran. Many sit inside the Popular Mobilisation Forces, which were formed in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group and are now part of Iraq's state forces. - Iraq's government is a partner of Washington and a neighbour of Iran. The drone launch sites were reported inside its territory. - The Houthis have held Yemen's capital, Sanaa, since 2014 and have fought a Saudi-led coalition since 2015. Der Standard reports they want to close the Bab al-Mandab strait to the kingdom.
What is at stake. The pipeline ends on the Red Sea, and the Red Sea's southern exit is the Bab al-Mandab. If Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab are both threatened, Saudi Arabia loses both of its routes around the other. If the attack came from Iraq, Iraq's government could be pulled into a fight between Riyadh and Tehran.
Where it stands. The pipeline is shut. No report we hold carries a claim of responsibility or a Saudi, Iranian or Iraqi government statement on who did it.

What is being argued about
- Who attacked the Saudi East–West pipeline
- Drone launch sites found on Iraqi soil
- Whether the Tayyib crossing closed for security or for reorganisation
- Whether the shutdown moved oil supply or prices
