Ukraine says Russia holds only a strip a few kilometres deep on the Sumy border. An unnamed Russian source tells TASS that Kyiv is sending Colombians to Kharkiv
Four reports came out within 23 minutes on 22 September. Three rest on Ukraine's military and describe small Russian infantry attacks on a front with no clear line. The fourth, from Russian state news agency TASS, rests on one unnamed defence source and is about foreign fighters. None of the four answers the others.
Ukraine's account. Viktor Trehubov speaks for Ukraine's Joint Forces. He told Suspilne that Russian troops have "dug in" on a strip a few kilometres deep along the Sumy border. He also said their plans to push 10–15 km into Ukraine were not carried out. Border guard spokesman Andrii Demchenko told Espreso TV that small Russian infantry groups keep attacking the edges of the Vilkhuvatka and Vovchansk communities in Kharkiv region. He said guards beat back four such attacks on Monday.
Russia's account. TASS cites an unnamed "Russian defense source". The source says Ukraine is moving Colombian mercenary groups to Kharkiv. TASS also gives a count of foreign fighters, which it credits to unnamed "defense agencies".

From the front. A soldier from the 48th Brigade told Suspilne: "there is no front line as such."
What is not settled. No report we hold measures the strip independently. None confirms or rejects the Colombian redeployment. None says who made the headcount or how. Neither side gives a casualty number. No Russian report we hold describes the fighting on the ground.
What this is about. This story covers fighting along Ukraine's northern border with Russia, in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions. Russian troops are trying to hold or widen ground there.
How it got here. The war began in 2014. That year Russia annexed Crimea, and fighting broke out in the eastern Donbas region between Ukraine and forces backed by Moscow. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Its columns crossed the northern border towards Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Kharkiv. By spring 2022 Russian forces had withdrawn from the north around Kyiv, and a Ukrainian counter-offensive in September 2022 pushed them out of most of Kharkiv region. The northern border then became a zone of shelling and small raids. In May 2024 Russia opened a new cross-border push into Kharkiv region, towards Vovchansk. In August 2024 Ukraine sent troops into Russia's Kursk region. Fighting has since moved back onto the Ukrainian side of the border, including in Sumy region.
Who is involved. Ukraine's border guards and army brigades hold this line. Their spokesmen are the main source of Ukrainian reporting on it. Russia's defence ministry and state news agencies give Moscow's account. Foreigners have fought for Ukraine since 2022, many in its International Legion. Russian officials call them mercenaries. Ukraine calls them volunteers.
What is at stake. Ground taken here puts Russian artillery and drones closer to Kharkiv and Sumy, two large cities near the border. It also pulls Ukrainian troops away from the fighting further east. The claims about foreign fighters are part of Moscow's case that Ukraine relies on outsiders to fight.
Where it stands. On 22 September Ukrainian officials described small Russian infantry attacks on a front with no clear line. Moscow's account, as TASS carried it, said nothing about the ground and talked about who is fighting it.
What is being argued about
- How deep Russian forces have got into Sumy region, and whether their push has stalled
- Small Russian infantry attacks at Vilkhuvatka and Vovchansk in Kharkiv region
- An unnamed Russian source's claim that Ukraine is moving Colombian fighters to Kharkiv
- A front that one Ukrainian soldier says has no clear line
