Ukrainska Pravda says two glide bombs and two wounded, Suspilne says artillery and an elderly woman dead
Five reports, all Ukrainian, on one morning strike in Kramatorsk. Three call the weapon artillery, three call it aerial bombs, and one carries both in a single headline. We hold no Russian account of it.
What we hold. Five reports, all Ukrainian, on one strike on Kramatorsk on the morning of 20 September. Three call the weapon artillery. Three call it aerial bombs. One calls it both.
The weapon. Ukrainska Pravda, citing Kramatorsk city administration head Oleksandr Honcharenko, puts the attack at about 11:19 with two aerial bombs — "попередньо – КАБами", preliminarily guided ones — and cites humanitarian mission head Yevhen Kaplin for a direct hit on an evacuation point where evacuees and mission staff were standing. Suspilne and Censor.NET describe artillery and do not mention an evacuation point at all. Obozrevatel puts artillery shelling and a bomb on the point in the same headline.
The count.
| Outlet | Weapon | Killed | Wounded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suspilne | artillery | an elderly woman | a man |
| Censor.NET | artillery | one person | one |
| Ukrainska Pravda | two aerial bombs | none given | two, as of 13:00 |
| Obozrevatel | artillery and a bomb | one, undescribed | "wounded", no figure |
The damage. Ukrainska Pravda gives four multi-storey blocks plus a preschool and a school. Obozrevatel gives four multi-storey blocks and five cars. No report we hold gives a different count.
Not settled. Whether the shelling and the bombs were one attack or two — no report reconciles them. Whether the evacuation point was hit directly: three reports say a bomb landed there, two do not mention the point. The toll: three reports carry a death, and Ukrainska Pravda says the consequences were still being established. And Russia's account, which we do not hold. No report names the woman killed.
What this is about. A city in eastern Ukraine was struck on a morning when civilians were being collected to be taken out of it, and the Ukrainian outlets reporting it do not agree on what hit it or how many it killed.
How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and fighting began in the eastern region of Donbas between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists. On 24 February 2022 Russia invaded on a full scale, and the eastern front has been the main axis of that invasion ever since. Kramatorsk sits in Donetsk region, north-west of the front line, and has been the region's Ukrainian-administered centre since 2014. It is close enough to the fighting to be reachable from the Russian side, and far enough back to function as a place people are moved to and through. Ukrainian authorities have ordered evacuations from front-line settlements in the region, and humanitarian organisations — Proliska, named in one of these reports, is one of them — staff the points where civilians gather to leave.
Who is in it. Russian forces, named as the attacker by all five reports. Kramatorsk's city military administration, which counts the dead here. Proliska, whose staff were at the point. And the Ukrainian press, which is the only press we hold on this.
Why the weapon matters. Artillery is fired from guns within range of the city. A guided aerial bomb is a Soviet-era bomb fitted with wings and a guidance kit, released from an aircraft well back from the front. Which one it was says something different about how close the front is — and a direct hit on a marked evacuation point is a different thing in the legal record from a shell landing in a residential district.
Where it stands. One day's reporting, all of it Ukrainian, none of it reconciled, and no Russian statement in anything we hold.
What is being argued about
- Whether the morning strike on Kramatorsk was artillery or two guided aerial bombs
- Whether an evacuation point was hit directly, and who was standing there
- How many were killed and wounded, and which body counted them
- That we hold no Russian account of the strike at all
