UN News says at least 20 dead in the Gaza City collapse, NOS says 19
A block sheltering displaced families fell overnight in Gaza City. Two of the three reports we hold say Israeli strikes had already damaged it; one names nobody.
What all three agree on. A residential block in Gaza City, lived in by displaced Palestinians, came down overnight on Wednesday. Every report we hold says the building had already been damaged before it fell.
The count splits three ways.
| Outlet | Dead | Also counted | Who gave the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| UN News | at least 20 | — | "according to reports" |
| NOS | at least 19 — 8 children, 11 adults | 25 hurt; six displaced families lived there | the Gaza health ministry, via Reuters |
| Libération | 20 | dozens missing | the Civil Defence |
Who is named as acting. Two of the three name Israeli strikes. NOS says the block was partly destroyed by Israeli air attacks during the war. Libération says it was weakened by Israeli strikes. UN News calls it "a bombed-out building" and names no one who bombed it — in its headline, the collapse does the killing.
Not settled. Whether 19 died or 20: the two figures come from two different bodies, counted at two different hours, and neither report says they count the same thing. How many are missing — only Libération puts a figure on it, and the figure is "dozens". Whether the toll is final: NOS says the search of the rubble goes on. And who died. No report we hold names a single one of them.
A residential block in Gaza City collapsed overnight on Wednesday, killing the people sheltering inside. They were displaced Palestinians — families who had lost their own homes in the war and moved into what was left of someone else's. The block was one of those: damaged by air strikes, never repaired, lived in anyway. Most buildings in Gaza have been destroyed during the war, NOS reports, and the wrecked ones still standing are where displaced people shelter. Rescue teams were still searching the rubble when these reports were published, so each carries a running count taken at a different hour. The day before, the UN human rights chief, Volker Türk, said the remains being recovered from rubble across Gaza raised grave concerns about breaches of international law, and asked that attacks on residential buildings be investigated.
What is being argued about
- How many died in the collapse: 19 or 20
- Whether a report names who damaged the building before it fell
- Who produced each figure — a health ministry, a rescue service, or nobody named
- What goes uncounted: the injured, the missing, and the names of the dead
