Vedomosti says Ukrainian drones; Ukrainska Pravda says Ukrainian drones "redirected by Russian jamming"
Finland has completed its investigation into drones that crossed its border. Three reports carry the same finding and three different subjects.
The finding. Finland has completed an investigation into drones that entered its territory, and all three reports we hold say the drones came from Ukraine. None of the three names the Finnish body that reached the finding. None quotes a Finnish official.
Where the accounts part.
| Report | What crossed | What moved it | Detail only it gives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vedomosti (headline only, no text) | "Ukrainian drones" | not given | the investigation is closed |
| Ukrainska Pravda, in English | four drones "originated in Ukraine" | "redirected by Russian jamming" | four drones, spring 2026 |
| Ukrainska Pravda, in Ukrainian | "Ukrainian drones with explosives" | not given; they strayed in "випадково" — accidentally | the drones carried explosives |
One newsroom, two explanations. Ukrainska Pravda's English and Ukrainian reports are timed to the same minute. The English one names two actors: Ukraine supplied the drones, Russian jamming moved them. The Ukrainian one names one, and calls the crossing an accident without saying who established that.
What is not settled. Which Finnish authority closed the investigation, and what it actually said. The jamming appears in one report of three. The number four appears in one. The explosives appear in one. No report we hold carries Finland's own words, and none quotes anybody by name.
What this is about. Finland investigated drones from the war in Ukraine that came down on its territory, and has now closed the case.
How it got here. - Russia's war on Ukraine began in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and backed armed groups in the east. Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. - Finland shares a long land border with Russia. It stayed out of military alliances for decades. After the full-scale invasion it joined NATO in April 2023. - Both armies now rely on long-range drones. Ukraine uses them to strike targets deep inside Russia. Both sides use electronic jamming to knock drones off course. - A drone thrown off course can leave the war zone and land in a neighbouring country. In September 2025 drones crossed into Poland, and Poland asked NATO allies for formal consultations. - Vedomosti reports that four Ukrainian drones fell in Finland in spring 2026. Finnish authorities treated the cases as a border violation and as negligence.
Who is involved, and why. - Finland has to decide whether an intrusion was an accident, a crime or a hostile act. That decision matters on the alliance's border with Russia. - Ukraine launched the drones. It needs its partners' goodwill. - Russia is fighting Ukraine and jams drones. Its state media have an interest in showing Ukraine's weapons landing on NATO soil. - NATO commits its members to defend one another. That makes the cause of any intrusion a question for the whole alliance.
What is at stake. If a drone came in by accident, the case is a matter for the police. If it came in on purpose, it is a matter between states. How the blame is split between Ukraine, which fired the drones, and Russia, which may have diverted them, decides whose account the incidents strengthen.
Where it stands. Vedomosti, citing Finland's border guard, reports that prosecutors closed the preliminary investigation. The investigation found no evidence to justify continuing a prosecution. The border guard added that closing the case does not mean the drones entered Finnish airspace with permission. We do not hold Finland's full statement.

- Finland's completed investigation into drones that entered its airspace
- Whether Russian jamming pushed Ukrainian drones off course
- How many drones crossed, when, and whether they were armed
