Washington Examiner calls it a "subdued address"; Fox News says he "flexes American power" at the UN
Trump told the General Assembly he must choose between a deal with Iran and annihilating it. Three of ten reports put "annihilate" in the headline; one leaves the threat out entirely. Two reports on the Cuban walkout attach it to two different sentences of the speech.
The speech. Trump told the UN General Assembly on Tuesday that he has "a big decision to make": a deal that lets Iran rebuild, or "do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly".
What kind of speech it was is the disagreement.
| Outlet | What it led with |
|---|---|
| Washington Examiner | a "subdued address"; he "defended his decision to start a war with Iran" |
| Fox News | he "defends US interventions abroad", "settling years of unfinished business" |
| The Washington Post | he "warns U.N. he might 'annihilate' Iran as war overshadows diplomacy" |
| The Hill | he "floats 'big decision'" on whether to annihilate Iran or make a deal |
| Reuters | "annihilate", and a deal expected after the midterms |
| CNBC | the US "will no longer permit threats" in the Western Hemisphere |
The midterms. The Post says domestic politics "won't sway his Iran policy". The Examiner, The Hill and Reuters carry him predicting a deal "right after" November's elections, and the Examiner quotes him saying Tehran is "waiting to see how I do in the midterm election".
Cuba. The delegation walked out. The New York Times says after he called Cuba a "failed state"; The Hill says as he said "freedom will be coming".
Not settled. Whether the two Cuba reports describe the same moment. What he decides, or when. No report we hold quotes an Iranian voice.
What this is about. The US president used his annual speech to the UN General Assembly to say he is choosing between a negotiated settlement with Iran and destroying its government.
How it got here. The General Assembly's high-level debate brings heads of government to New York each September, and the chamber includes delegations from states the United States is fighting or sanctioning. Iran has been governed as an Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution, and its nuclear programme has been the central dispute with Washington for two decades: a 2015 agreement limited that programme in exchange for sanctions relief, and Trump withdrew the United States from it in 2018, during his first term. The Washington Examiner dates the present war at seven months, and describes it as months of failed diplomacy followed by strikes meant to degrade Iran's nuclear programme and force Tehran back to the table; it reports that the two countries reached a framework and a ceasefire that "quickly fell apart". Fox News gives Iran's "nuclear weapons pursuit" as the reason for the threat, in its own voice and with no source attached.
Who is in it. Trump, who ordered the strikes and says he may order more. Iran's government, which no report we hold quotes. Cuba, under a communist government since 1959 and a US embargo since 1962, whose delegation walked out of the chamber. Denmark: the Examiner reports Trump confirmed two new US military bases in Greenland, the Danish territory he spent months threatening to annex, under a deal signed after the speech. Venezuela, whose former president Nicolas Maduro the Examiner reports was extradited in the middle of the night.
What is at stake. Whether the war resumes or stops at a deal. Trump said the election "doesn't even enter my mind" on Iran, and in the same speech said a deal could come "right after" it.
Where it stands. No decision announced. Americans vote in November.
What is being argued about
- The choice Trump put to the chamber: a deal with Iran, or annihilating it
- Whether November's elections are shaping his Iran policy — he denied it and predicted it in the same speech
- The Cuban delegation's walkout, and which line of the speech two outlets say triggered it
- The Western Hemisphere doctrine: strikes in the Caribbean, Maduro's extradition, bases in Greenland
