Washington Examiner says the Left "made Charlie Kirk's assassination inevitable"; The Intercept counts the people fired for criticising him
Ten reports mark a year since the killing at a Utah campus. Two name a political side as the cause. One names the man charged. None covers his case.
Ten reports, one date, four subjects. Charlie Kirk was shot dead at Utah Valley University on 10 September 2025, aged 31. Ten reports we hold mark the anniversary, and they are not about the same year. Two name a political side as the cause of the killing. One names Tyler Robinson, the man charged, and does it in a photograph caption. None of the ten covers his case.
What each says the year was about
| Outlet | The year is about | Attributed? |
|---|---|---|
| Washington Examiner | "The Left made Charlie Kirk's assassination inevitable" | stated flat, no source |
| Washington Examiner | a "documented rise in violence from the radical Left" | attributed to Rubio; no figures |
| Washington Examiner | a "Kirkaversary" run by "left-wing influencers" | names Trump and Mike Lee too |
| Fox News | flyers at three universities | all three say no event was registered |
| The Intercept | people fired who are "still unemployed" | stated flat |
| The New York Times | a movement that "has splintered" | stated flat |
| The Hill | Gov. Cox names "Charlie Kirk Day" | our only report on it |
Not settled. Whether the "Kirkaversary" gatherings existed: Fox News reports the flyers, reports that all three universities say nothing was registered, and says who made them is unknown. The Washington Examiner's "more than 40%" surge in German left-wing violence reaches us through one column relaying Rubio; no report we hold gives the numbers, the period or who compiled them. The Hill is the only report we hold on the Utah proclamation, and none contradicts it.
What this is about. A year ago a conservative activist was shot dead on a Utah campus. Americans still disagree about what the killing meant and who is to blame.
How it got here
- 2012. Charlie Kirk, then 18, founded Turning Point USA. The group organises conservative students on college campuses. His signature method was the open-air debate: he set up a table and invited students who disagreed with him to argue. He became one of the best-known voices of the young right and a close ally of Donald Trump.
- The backdrop. The killing came during a run of attacks on political figures. Trump survived an attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024. Minnesota state legislator Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot dead at home in June 2025.
- 10 September 2025. Kirk, aged 31, was shot while speaking to students at Utah Valley University in Orem, on a stop of what Fox News calls his "American Comeback Tour".
- The charge. Utah prosecutors charged Tyler Robinson, a Utah man, with aggravated murder. A Washington Examiner photo caption shows him at a hearing in Provo in December 2025. His motive is for a court to establish. None of the ten reports we hold covers his case.
- The aftermath. In the weeks after the killing, employers fired or suspended people over what they posted about Kirk. The Intercept calls this a "revenge purge". Whether the firings were accountability or censorship is still disputed.
Who is involved, and why
- Turning Point USA: the movement Kirk built. The New York Times says it "has splintered" since his death.
- Spencer Cox: Utah's Republican governor. The killing happened in his state. He has now named 10 September "Charlie Kirk Day".
- Marco Rubio: Secretary of State. In a July address he listed the killing among acts of left-wing violence, according to the Washington Examiner.
- Universities: they host these campus debates, and now they have to decide what can be said about Kirk on their grounds.
What is at stake
- Whether the killing is treated as one man's crime or as the product of one side's politics.
- How far speech about it can be punished.
- Whether open debate on campus, the thing Kirk was known for, keeps its place.
Where it stands. The anniversary produced a state proclamation, memorials and competing accounts of the year. Robinson's prosecution is the open question, and we hold no report on where it stands.

What is being argued about
- Who is named as the cause of the killing
- The "Kirkaversary" flyers and streams, and whether the events were real
- People fired or suspended for what they posted about Kirk
- Utah's "Charlie Kirk Day" and the memorial at the campus where he was shot
