Welt calls it an 'existential crisis' and Magyar Nemzet says Merz's party is crumbling, while FAZ and taz report a committee seat and a beach chair

Four reports on the CDU, all filed on 28 September. Two say the chancellor's party is in crisis, in their own voice. Two report one politician stepping back from a committee seat and another from a beach chair. Each of the three concrete claims rests on a single report.

Europe Germany

What we hold. Four reports, all filed on 28 September within about an hour of each other. Three are German and one is Hungarian. Each carries a different piece of the story, and none confirms another.

Outlet What it reports How big it says this is
Welt Amthor and Spahn showed "eine Instinktlosigkeit". One of them "hat bereits Konsequenzen gezogen" "existenziellen Krise der Union", in its own voice
Magyar Nemzet A Brandenburg CDU branch wrote to Merz: "Itt az ideje a következményeknek" ("it is time for consequences") The party "tovább bomladozik" (keeps crumbling), in its own voice
Frankfurter Allgemeine Spahn gives up his budget committee seat "nach Kritik". An unnamed CDU politician says normal work is "kaum möglich" No verdict of its own
taz Amthor is having a Strandkorb (beach chair) taken off his Chancellery balcony "nach Aufregung im Netz" No verdict of its own

Two call it a crisis. Two do not. Welt and Magyar Nemzet state the crisis flat and attribute it to no one. FAZ and taz report two politicians stepping back and leave the scale to the reader.

Critics are not named. FAZ writes "after criticism" and taz "after uproar online". Neither names a critic. Only Magyar Nemzet names a party body, and it does not say which Brandenburg branch.

What is not settled - Each claim, on Spahn, on Amthor and on the letter, rests on one report. - What Spahn was criticised for. No report we hold says. - Which of the two men Welt means by "one has drawn consequences". - What the "existential crisis" consists of. Welt does not say in the lines we hold.

What this is about. Senior figures in Germany's governing CDU are stepping back under criticism, and outlets disagree on whether this is a passing embarrassment or a crisis for the chancellor's party.

How it got here. Germany held an early federal election in February 2025, after the three-party coalition led by Olaf Scholz of the SPD collapsed in late 2024. The CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, came first. Their leader, Friedrich Merz, became chancellor in May 2025 at the head of a coalition with the SPD. In German, "die Union" means the CDU and CSU together, not the European Union. That is the "Union" Welt says is in crisis.

The actors. - Friedrich Merz, CDU leader and federal chancellor. - Jens Spahn, a senior CDU figure and former federal health minister, who has led the CDU/CSU group in the Bundestag since 2025. - Philipp Amthor, a CDU member of the Bundestag from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. taz reports he has recently moved to a job in the Chancellery. - The Bundestag budget committee scrutinises and amends the federal budget. It is one of parliament's most powerful committees. - Brandenburg, an eastern German state around Berlin, where the CDU is in opposition at state level.

What is at stake. Germany is the Union's largest economy and carries the most weight in the Council of the EU. A chancellor whose own party is openly restive has less room to govern at home and to bargain in Brussels. If the steps back remain isolated, this is a story about two politicians. If more branches follow the Brandenburg letter, it becomes a story about Merz's authority.

Where it stands. On 28 September the reports we hold describe one committee seat given up and one beach chair removed. None of them says what set off the wider pressure Welt and Magyar Nemzet describe.

What is being argued about

  • Is the CDU in an 'existential crisis', or are two politicians stepping back from small missteps?
  • Why did Jens Spahn give up his seat on the budget committee?
  • Amthor's beach chair on the Chancellery balcony and the online reaction
  • A Brandenburg CDU branch's letter to Merz calling for consequences

Crisis in the report's voice

Two reports call the party's state a crisis or a collapse in their own voice. One gives the pressure to 'the internet' and one to an unnamed politician. Only a regional branch is quoted by name.

2 reports stating crisis in their own voice 2 reports with an unnamed or vague source 1 reports quoting a named party body
