Welt quotes Trump blaming Tehran, Le Figaro credits the Houthis, Rzeczpospolita names only drones
Saudi Arabia shut its East-West pipeline after a drone attack. Six of the 11 reports we hold carry the strike, and they do not agree on who carried it out. None counts anyone hurt.
What every report agrees on. Saudi Arabia temporarily closed the East-West pipeline after a drone attack. Rzeczpospolita and De Standaard both carry the closure; Libération adds that Riyadh confirmed the strikes on Friday evening.
Who did it, masthead by masthead.
| Outlet | Who is named as acting | Attributed? |
|---|---|---|
| Welt | Tehran | Yes — Trump: "probably they are behind it" |
| Gazeta Wyborcza | Iran, in the headline | No source attached |
| Le Figaro | The Yemeni rebels, who "took the Red Sea coast" | No — stated flat |
| Rzeczpospolita | Nobody — "after a drone attack" | — |
| Libération | Nobody — satellite images, Riyadh confirms | — |
| De Standaard | Nobody — the line is stopped after being hit | — |
The numbers. Only Rzeczpospolita gives a price: oil back above 100 dollars a barrel, with Orlen saying on Saturday that Polish supply is not at risk. Libération gives the only physical measure, a plume of smoke nearly 100 kilometres long south of Medina. Welt has freighters going round the Cape of Good Hope again.
Not settled. No report we hold carries a Saudi attribution, an Iranian claim of responsibility, or a Houthi statement. The Houthi call to Washington reaches us three times — Welt, De Telegraaf, De Standaard — and all three have it from Trump: one source, three mastheads. None of the 11 reports names or counts anyone hurt at the pipeline, or says whether anyone was there.
What this is about. A drone attack has shut Saudi Arabia's main land route for getting oil to sea without passing Iran.
How it got here. - Most Gulf oil leaves by sea through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow channel between Iran and Oman. - Saudi Arabia built the East-West pipeline in the 1980s so it would not depend on that channel. The pipeline carries crude from the oilfields in the east to Yanbu, a port on the Red Sea. - Oil shipped from the Red Sea to Europe passes a second narrow channel, Bab al-Mandab, between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. It then goes on to Suez. - In Yemen, the Houthi movement took the capital, Sanaa, in 2014. A Saudi-led coalition went to war against it in March 2015. A truce has largely held since April 2022. - From late 2023 the Houthis attacked ships in the Red Sea and said they were acting over the war in Gaza. The EU began a naval mission there, Aspides, in February 2024. - Washington and Riyadh accuse Iran of arming the Houthis. Tehran does not accept that it directs them.
The actors. - Saudi Arabia is the world's largest oil exporter, Rzeczpospolita notes, and owns the pipeline. - Iran and the United States are at war, AFP reports via HotNews.ro, with control of Hormuz at the centre of it. De Telegraaf says the peace talks between them are shaky. - According to Le Figaro, the Houthis have taken Yemen's Red Sea coast in a few days, after declaring a blockade of Saudi ships.
What is at stake. The pipeline was Saudi Arabia's way around Hormuz. Efimerida ton Syntakton says the energy trade is caught between two straits: Iran at Hormuz and the Houthis at Bab al-Mandab. Rzeczpospolita puts oil back above 100 dollars a barrel. Welt reports that freighters are again going round the Cape of Good Hope, a much longer route to European ports.
Where it stands. Riyadh has confirmed the strikes, Libération reports, and the line is closed for now. No report we hold says when it will reopen, and no report carries a claim of responsibility.
What is being argued about
- Who attacked the Saudi East-West pipeline
- Whether Washington will intervene in Yemen, and what the Houthis asked of it
- What the Red Sea blockade does to the oil price and to European supply
- What Tehran says back
