Welt says almost a million VW cars in Germany; Telex says four million, not two
Volkswagen group has recalled cars over a corroding steering bolt. The two reports we hold give very different numbers. They appear to count different things, but neither says what the other counted.
The defect. Both reports describe corrosion at a bolted joint in the steering. Telex says the bolt can rust through and 'eventually break', which it says creates a risk of accidents. Welt names the corrosion but does not describe the risk.
The numbers. The two figures do not match, and they are probably not measuring the same thing.
| Welt (Germany) | Telex (Hungary) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cars | 'almost a million' | 'four million instead of two' |
| Where | Germany | no country named |
| Brands | VW, Audi, Seat | Audi, Seat, Škoda, Volkswagen |
| Risk stated | no | yes: bolt can break, crash risk |
| Framing | some drivers may need two garage visits | largest group recall since the diesel scandal |
The comparison. Telex alone calls this Volkswagen group's largest recall since the diesel scandal. Welt makes no comparison.
The drivers. Welt alone says some owners will 'probably' have to go to the garage twice. It does not say why.
What is not settled - Whether four million is the worldwide total. Telex does not say so. - What the earlier two million counted, and when that figure was given. - Whether Škoda cars are part of the recall in Germany. Welt does not name the brand. - Which models and which years are affected. Neither report names them. - Whether any accidents have already happened. Neither report says.
What this is about. Europe's largest carmaker is calling back cars from several of its brands to fix a steering part that can rust.
How it got here. A recall is how a carmaker fixes a safety defect in cars it has already sold. Owners are told to take the car to a dealer, and the repair is free. In Germany, recalls are overseen by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Across the European Union, cars are approved for sale under common EU type-approval rules. As a result, a defect found in one market usually leads to action in many.
Volkswagen group is based in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony. The state of Lower Saxony is one of its main shareholders. In September 2015 the company admitted it had fitted diesel cars with software that cheated emissions tests. That became the diesel scandal: years of recalls, fines and court cases in Europe and the United States. It is the yardstick Telex uses for this recall.
Who is involved. Volkswagen group sells cars under several brands. The ones named in these reports are Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Škoda. Seat is Spanish and Škoda is Czech, and all of them share parts and platforms. That is why one faulty component can reach several brands at once. Regulators such as the KBA can order or supervise a recall. Owners carry the practical cost: time off the road and trips to the garage.
What is at stake. A steering failure is a safety matter, not only a cost. The size of the recall matters to the group because repairs are expensive and damage its reputation. It also matters to owners across many EU countries, who need to know whether their car is affected.
Where it stands. The two reports we hold, both published on 26 September 2026, confirm that the recall covers several brands. They disagree on how many cars it covers. Neither names the models.
What is being argued about
- How many cars the recall covers, and where
- Which brands are included
- Whether a corroded steering bolt can break and cause a crash
- How this recall compares with the diesel scandal
