Welt says Steinmeier also turned on the media; HotNews says he warned of Weimar
Two outlets report Germany's president's Unity Day speech. Both say he warned that the demagogy of extremists endangers the country's unity. Each carries one claim the other leaves out, and no report we hold names the extremists he meant.
What both carry. Frank-Walter Steinmeier used his speech on 3 October to warn about extremists. Welt quotes him in its headline: "Die unerträgliche politische Demagogie gefährdet unsere innere Einheit." HotNews.ro gives the same words in Romanian. It says he called the extremists a threat to freedom and democracy.
Where they split. Each outlet carries a claim the other does not.
| Welt | HotNews.ro | |
|---|---|---|
| Extremists threaten unity | yes | yes |
| Criticism of the media | "Scharfe Kritik übte er auch an den Medien" | not mentioned |
| Weimar comparison | not mentioned | yes, as his warning |
| How it ends | "Anlass zur Hoffnung sieht er dennoch" | voters "întorc spatele unor drepturi fundamentale" |
Who is blamed. In the body of its report, HotNews.ro blames "forțelor extremiste". Its headline says it is voters who turn their backs on rights.
A wider view. Der Freitag published before the speech. It says in its own voice that Germany is "von sozialem Zusammenhalt so weit entfernt wie nie". As evidence it gives a Berlin parliamentary inquiry into cohesion. The paper says the inquiry failed to answer its own question. Welt files a sermon by Bodo Ramelow under the same theme of unity.
What is not settled. - Which party or group Steinmeier meant. No report names one. - What he said about the media. Welt reports the criticism but not what it was. - Whether he drew the Weimar comparison. Only HotNews.ro reports it.
What this is about. On the national holiday, Germany's head of state warned that extremism is endangering the country's unity.
How it got here. After the Second World War, Germany was split in two: the Federal Republic in the west and the communist GDR in the east. The Berlin Wall fell in November 1989. The two states reunited on 3 October 1990, and that date became the Day of German Unity, the national holiday. Each year it brings speeches on how far east and west have grown together.
The Weimar Republic was Germany's first democracy, from 1919 to 1933. Street violence and parties hostile to the system tore it apart, and it ended when Hitler came to power. In German politics, comparing the present to Weimar is a warning that democracy itself can fail.
Who is involved. - Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been federal president since 2017. The office is largely ceremonial and stands above party politics. Its main tool is the speech. Before that he was foreign minister for the Social Democrats. - Bodo Ramelow of the Left party led the government of Thuringia, an eastern state, for most of the decade to 2024. On the holiday he spoke from a pulpit. - The extremists are not named in any report we hold, so we do not name them.
What is at stake. A president who warns of Weimar is saying the danger is to the system itself, not to one government. How the speech is read depends on two open questions. Whom did he mean? Did he blame parties, voters or the media?
Where it stands. Welt reports that many prominent politicians called for more cohesion on the holiday. They pointed to rising extremism and to emotion running high online. Der Freitag notes that Berlin's state parliament set up an inquiry at the end of 2024 to find out what holds society together. The paper says the inquiry's final report does not answer that question.
What is being argued about
- Steinmeier's warning that the demagogy of extremists endangers Germany's inner unity
- Whether he compared today's Germany with the Weimar Republic
- What, if anything, he said against the media
- Whether Germany is more divided than ever, as Der Freitag argues
