Welt's Keilani calls the Koçak case the 'tip of the iceberg'; taz asks what is true in the charges, and Der Freitag says it is chat messages, not money
Die Linke won Berlin's election. The SPD must now decide whether to govern with it. Four reports from three outlets disagree on how heavily the accusations against the Linke MP Ferat Koçak should count in that choice. None of them quotes the party.
The charge. Fatina Keilani, an opinion editor at Welt, calls the Ferat Koçak case the "Spitze des Eisbergs". She says Die Linke is deeply tied to the Islamist milieu. As Welt quotes her, her evidence is this: "Ich habe mit Leuten von der Polizei gesprochen." She names no officer.
The test. taz asks "Was dran ist an den Vorwürfen". It says the accusations concern antisemitism and contacts with criminals. Der Freitag says the Koçak case turns on Instagram messages with Firas Remmo, "nicht um Geldflüsse". It compares the case with a 1985 CDU bribery scandal in West Berlin, which it calls a "viel engere" tie.
The coalition. A guest author from the Hamburg SPD writes in Welt that the SPD "mit dieser Linken nicht koalieren darf". taz reports a growing number of SPD voices for red-green-red, now including members of the Bundestag. The text we hold names none of them.
| Outlet | On the charges | On a coalition |
|---|---|---|
| Welt, Keilani | "Spitze des Eisbergs" | — |
| Welt, SPD guest author | the SPD stands against "Menschenfeindlichkeit" | must not happen |
| taz | asks what is true in them | SPD voices for it; a national left majority is "Ein Fiebertraum" |
| Der Freitag | messages, not money | — |
What is not settled. We do not know what the messages said. We do not know who is making the charges: two taz reports mention "heftige Vorwürfe" and "heftigen Widerstand" and name no one behind them. We do not know whether the SPD will agree to the coalition. No report we hold quotes Die Linke or Koçak. We hold only the opening lines of the two Welt pieces.
What this is about: whether the Social Democrats (SPD) will form a government in Berlin with Die Linke, the party that won the city's election, while accusations against one Linke politician hang over the talks.
How it got here. Berlin is a city and also one of Germany's sixteen federal states. Its parliament, the Abgeordnetenhaus, elects the governing mayor, so the largest party usually needs partners to govern. From 2016 the SPD, the Greens and Die Linke ran the city together. Germans call this "red-green-red", after the parties' colours. The 2021 Berlin election was badly run, and a court ordered it re-held. After the re-run in 2023, the SPD left that alliance and went into coalition as the junior partner of the Christian Democrats (CDU), under mayor Kai Wegner. In the new election, reported this week, Die Linke came first. Its result makes red-green-red possible again, but only if the SPD agrees.
The actors. Die Linke is a left-wing party. It grew out of the former East German ruling party and a western breakaway from the SPD. Ferat Koçak is a Linke politician from the Berlin district of Neukölln. According to Der Freitag, he is under pressure over a chat with Firas Remmo. Remmo is the surname of a large Berlin family, some of whose members have been convicted in high-profile criminal cases. The SPD has to choose between a coalition led from its left and the alternatives, and its members are split. Welt belongs to Axel Springer. taz and Der Freitag are papers of the left.
What is at stake. A Linke-led government would be the first in a western German capital with Die Linke in charge. If the SPD agrees, it becomes a model the national party has to answer for. If it refuses, it must explain why it is walking away from the largest party.
Where it stands. No coalition has been agreed. None of the reports we hold says whether talks have begun.
What is being argued about
- How heavily the Koçak accusations should weigh, and what they actually involve
- Whether the SPD should govern Berlin with Die Linke
- Charges reported with no accuser named
- Whether a left majority is conceivable nationally
