White House says South Korea will invest $200 billion; Washington Examiner leads on $54 billion for one Alaska pipeline
Two reports filed before the White House announcement lead on different numbers. They do not compete: the Examiner puts its $54 billion pipeline figure inside the $200 billion total. Only the Examiner ties the deal to a close Senate race in Alaska.
Two headlines, two numbers. Reuters, citing the White House, says Trump will unveil a "$200 billion investment in US projects by South Korea". The Washington Examiner leads on "around $54 billion" for a gas pipeline running the length of Alaska.

The figures count different things. The Examiner says the pipeline money is "part of" South Korea's plans to invest about $200 billion. It puts the project's cost at "at least $44 billion and possibly more than $54 billion".
The politics are stated, not sourced. The Examiner calls the deal "a significant win" for Trump before the midterms. It says Sen. Dan Sullivan is in "a tight reelection race". It cites no poll for either claim.
Named backers, unnamed critics. The Examiner names Gov. Mike Dunleavy, Sullivan and South Korean ministers. Environmentalists get one sentence, with no name and no quote.
What is not settled - We hold only the Reuters headline. We could not read the full report. - Neither report quotes a South Korean official. - The Examiner says no final investment decision on the pipeline had been made as of September. - Both reports were filed before the announcement. We do not yet hold what was actually signed.
What this is about. South Korea is pledging money for projects in the United States. Part of it may go to a long-stalled gas pipeline in Alaska.
How it got here. South Korea and the United States have been treaty allies since the Mutual Defense Treaty of 1953, signed after the Korean War. In 2025 President Trump put tariffs on imports from most trading partners, South Korea among them. Seoul answered with trade talks, and pledges to invest in the US were part of the bargain. Today's announcement follows from those talks.
The pipeline idea is older than any of this. The plan is to carry gas from Alaska's North Slope, where its oil fields sit, south to the coast, cool it into liquid and ship it across the Pacific. The Washington Examiner says the line would run 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay. It says federal permitting finished in December after a 10-year review, and that officials expect the pipeline to be running by 2030 or 2031.
Who is involved. - The White House wants to sell more US energy abroad. Trump has promised to help Alaska develop its natural resources. - South Korea imports almost all of its energy. Alaska has courted its government since at least March 2025, when Gov. Mike Dunleavy visited Seoul. - 8 Star Alaska is developing the project. The Examiner says Glenfarne owns 75% of it and the state of Alaska 25%. - Sen. Dan Sullivan is an Alaska Republican who has sat in the Senate since 2015. He is up for reelection in the November midterms.
What is at stake. If the money is real and a final decision follows, Alaska gets a project its leaders have chased for decades, and Asian allies get another source of gas. If not, the pipeline stays what the Examiner calls "a risky project", with high costs and hard terrain.
Where it stands. The announcement was expected from the White House on the afternoon of 30 September. The Examiner says no final investment decision had been made as of September.
What is being argued about
- Whether $54 billion is part of the $200 billion total
- Who the $200 billion figure comes from
- The Alaska LNG pipeline and its cost
- The deal's link to Dan Sullivan's reelection race
