Wyborcza prints 'We can do this to anyone' as a US envoy's alleged words; former envoy Pyatt points to energy gains

Two European papers took one Wall Street Journal report, which we do not hold, in different directions. Gazeta Wyborcza framed it as US pressure over American gas, and Efimerida ton Syntakton led on a former US ambassador talking about partnership. Neither paper carries a reply from the ambassador herself.

Πάιατ για δημοσίευμα WSJ: «Ας μη χάνουμε από τα μάτια μας τα οφέλη που έχουν προκύψει από τη στενότερη ενεργειακή μας συνεργασία»

The allegation. Gazeta Wyborcza's headline asks whether Kimberly Guilfoyle, the US ambassador in Athens, helped bring down Romania's government and threatened Greece. It puts "We can do this to anyone" in quotation marks. Its text calls her words "alleged". It states flatly that she is pushing "hard" for multibillion purchases of American gas in the region.

The reply. Efimerida ton Syntakton traces the row to a Wall Street Journal report. Geoffrey Pyatt, a former US ambassador to Greece, wrote on X that the Journal's reporting "speaks for itself". He added: "let us not lose sight of the benefits of our closer energy cooperation." The paper says the Greek opposition reacted and the government answered through its spokesperson. It quotes neither of them.

Frame Pressure, put as a question Partnership, in Pyatt's words
Guilfoyle's words Quoted, called "alleged" Not quoted

Athens' reply Not carried Mentioned, not quoted
Bucharest's reply Not carried Not carried

What is not settled. - We do not hold the Wall Street Journal report, and both papers rest on it. - Neither paper says whether Guilfoyle said those words, to whom, or when. - Neither shows that US pressure had any part in the fall of Romania's government. - Neither carries a reply from Guilfoyle. - We hold only the opening lines of Wyborcza's piece. Pyatt's post is cut off in the text we hold.

What this is about. The question is whether Washington used its ambassador to push two EU member states, Greece and Romania, to buy American gas, and how hard.

How it got here. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The European Union then set out to end its dependence on Russian gas, which had long reached central and south-eastern Europe by pipeline. In May 2022 the European Commission launched its REPowerEU plan to replace that gas. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) was one of the main replacements: gas cooled to a liquid and shipped by sea, and the United States became a leading seller of it to Europe. Greece already had an LNG terminal at Revithoussa near Athens. In 2024 a floating terminal opened off Alexandroupolis. Athens presents the country as an entry point from which gas moves north to Bulgaria, Romania and beyond. Romania is also developing gas of its own under the Black Sea.

The actors. Kimberly Guilfoyle was nominated by President Donald Trump in December 2024 as US ambassador to Greece and later took up the post. Geoffrey Pyatt was ambassador in Athens from 2016 to 2022 and then led the State Department's energy bureau, so he helped build the Greek gas link. Greece is governed by New Democracy under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, a close ally of Washington on energy. Romania is a NATO member on the Black Sea.

What is at stake. Energy purchasing is a national decision, but it sits inside an EU framework. The Union has committed to phasing out Russian gas. It has also promised Washington larger purchases of American energy as part of trade talks. If an ambassador leaned on governments over those purchases, that is a question about how the United States treats EU member states. If she did not, it is a row over one newspaper's account.

Where it stands. The claims come from one Wall Street Journal report that we do not hold. The Greek government has replied through its spokesperson. We hold no reply from Guilfoyle and none from Bucharest.

What is being argued about

  • Whether the US ambassador in Athens threatened Greece or had a part in the fall of Romania's government
  • US pressure on EU member states to buy American LNG
  • Energy partnership against energy pressure: two readings of one Wall Street Journal report
  • Missing voices: the ambassador, the Greek government and Romanian officials, none of them quoted

unverified US ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle helped bring down Romania's government and threatened Greece.
Gazeta Wyborcza puts this as a question in its headline and calls her words 'domniemane' (alleged). Efimerida ton Syntakton traces the row to a Wall Street Journal report, so both reports rest on that one account, which we do not hold.
