Zelensky says 'important results' near Lyman; Ukrainska Pravda says three villages. We hold no Russian account

The claim. On Sunday 27 September President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram of "важливі результати" ("important results") on the Lyman front, under Operation "Vivaldi". He cited a report from commander-in-chief Mykhailo Drapatyi. His quoted words name no villages.

The figure. Four reports carry a weekly figure for Russian losses. They describe it in different ways.

The ground. Ukrainska Pravda's Ukrainian report says troops "liberated Shandryholove and Derylove and control Drobysheve", and says it in its own voice. Espreso TV traces that claim to Third Army Corps commander Andriy Biletskyi on 20 September. Only Espreso gives an area: 125 sq km returned to Ukrainian control, 50 of them from occupation, according to Biletskyi.

The extra. Only Kyiv Post adds that Ukrainian intelligence warns Russia is preparing to mobilise "300,000 more troops".

What is not settled. No report we hold carries a Russian defence ministry account or any independent check. The loss figure covers all fronts, not Lyman alone. Territory claimed has not been shown to be held. We do not know how the 10,660 was counted.

This story is about Ukraine's claim to have pushed Russian forces back near Lyman, a town in the north of Ukraine's Donetsk region.

How it got here. Russia's war on Ukraine began in 2014. That year Russia annexed Crimea, and armed separatists seized parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. On 24 February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Lyman changed hands that year: Russian forces took it in May 2022 and Ukrainian forces retook it that October. In September 2022 Russia declared that it had annexed the Donetsk region. Most states do not recognise that. The Lyman area has stayed close to the front since.

The operation. According to Espreso TV, Third Army Corps commander Andriy Biletskyi announced an offensive called "Vivaldi" on 15 September. He said it would run in four "seasons". On 20 September he claimed three villages.

The actors. Volodymyr Zelensky is Ukraine's president and speaks for its government. The reports name Mykhailo Drapatyi as commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces. The Third Army Corps is the Ukrainian formation that says it is running the operation. Russia's defence ministry issues its own reports on the front. We hold none on this sector.

What is at stake. Zelensky argues, as Espreso TV quotes him, that weeks like this stop Russia from widening its offensive. If the gains hold, Ukraine pushes the line back in a region Russia claims as its own. If they do not, the claims stay claims. Casualty figures from either army are that army's own count.

Where it stands. Ukraine's side has named villages and given a weekly figure. No source we hold has confirmed or disputed either.
