Zelensky says the captain died and one sailor is missing; Romania's interior ministry says two died; only The Insider says the ship sank

Drones struck a Turkish-flagged ship carrying maize about 20 nautical miles off Romania on 5 October. Five Ukrainian reports name Russia as the attacker. Two Russian-language reports name no attacker. The reports disagree on whether one or two people died, and only one of them says the ship sank.

What is agreed. A civilian ship flying the Turkish flag was hit by drones in the Black Sea on Monday 5 October. Eleven people were rescued, according to Suspilne, Espreso TV and Obozrevatel. Espreso TV, citing Romania's Digi24, places the ship about 20 nautical miles off the Romanian coast.

Who struck it. Five Ukrainian reports name Russian drones. Ukrainska Pravda and Censor.NET credit that to Volodymyr Zelensky in the headline, and Espreso TV does so in the body. Suspilne and Ekonomichna Pravda state it in their own voice. Obozrevatel says only that the ship "was attacked". The Insider says only "after a drone strike". We hold no Russian state report.

What it carried. Five reports say maize. Obozrevatel and The Insider say grain. Only The Insider gives a route: Ukraine to Italy.

What is not settled. Whether the ship sank: only The Insider says it did, and no other report says either way. Whether the toll is one or two. Who flew the drones, beyond Zelensky's word. No report names anyone on board.

What this is about. A merchant ship was hit by drones in the Black Sea close to Romania, a NATO member, while carrying Ukrainian farm produce.

How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. The Black Sea became part of the front. Ukraine is one of the world's large grain exporters, and most of that grain leaves by ship from ports around Odesa.

In July 2022 the UN and Turkey brokered the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which let ships carry Ukrainian grain out under agreed inspection. Russia withdrew from it in July 2023. Ukraine then kept ships moving along its own route, which runs close to the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria. Ships on it have been exposed to the war ever since.

Who is involved. - Ukraine depends on the sea route for export income. Its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is the source for the claim that Russia struck the ship. - Russia is the party Ukraine blames. We hold no Russian account of this incident. - Turkey controls the Bosporus and Dardanelles, the only way into the Black Sea, under the 1936 Montreux Convention. It helped broker the 2022 grain deal. The ship flew its flag. - Romania borders Ukraine and has a Black Sea coast. Its rescue services led the search, and its interior ministry gave a toll. - NATO counts both Turkey and Romania as members.

What is at stake. If ships near NATO coastlines can be hit, insurers and shipowners may avoid the route. Ukraine's exports and the countries that buy its grain would feel that. Who struck the ship decides how Ankara and Bucharest respond.

Where it stands. The toll, the attacker and whether the ship sank are all still open in the reports we hold.
