ABC says 80,000 and "la invasión"; El País says "unos 70.000" and puts the word in Feijóo's mouth
Five weeks after the July crossing into Ceuta, the reports we hold disagree on how many people came, what to call it, and how many are still there. A judge, a port full of tents and two sets of border checks now rest on those answers.
The number. Five of the ten reports we hold give a figure for the crossing on 30 and 31 July. Four say around or more than 70,000. ABC says 80,000. None of the five says where its number came from.
The word.
| Outlet | How many crossed | The word it uses | Whose word |
|---|---|---|---|
| ABC | 80,000 | "la invasión a Ceuta" | its own, in the headline |
| El País | "unos 70.000" | "invasión" | Feijóo's, in quotation marks |
| Observador | more than 70,000 | "entraram ilegalmente" | Sánchez's "ataque" marked as his |
| Le Monde | more than 70,000 | "a flood of teenagers" | a "so-called" invasion, called a far-right narrative |
| FAZ | tens of thousands | "Sturm" | its own; "Invasion" only in quotation marks |
Who acted. Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Juan Jesús Vivas told a Madrid audience on Monday that Morocco moved to extract "algún tipo de cesión"; Feijóo did not say which. A National High Court judge, taking the case the same day, quotes a police report on the "permissiveness" and "active guiding" of Moroccan officers. Le Monde reports Pedro Sánchez rejecting the idea of a Moroccan operation on 3 September for want of evidence.
Not settled. How many remain. Vivas says 10,000; the interior minister said about 5,000 on 13 August; ABC says several thousand and 1,612 registered children. No report says what the others count. And the dead: one report of ten gives a toll — Le Monde's "around a hundred" — and none names anybody who died.
What this is about. On 30 and 31 July more than 70,000 people, most of them Moroccan, crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, a Spanish city in North Africa. Spain, its neighbours and the EU still disagree on why it happened and what to do next.
How it got here
- Ceuta sits on the African shore of the Strait of Gibraltar. Portugal ceded it to Spain in 1668. Morocco has never recognised Spanish rule over Ceuta or over Melilla, the other Spanish city on that coast. The two cities are the EU's only land borders in Africa.
- Ceuta is in the EU and in the Schengen area. Even so, people arriving from Morocco are checked again before they can sail to mainland Spain.
- A similar crossing happened in May 2021. It came after Spain let the leader of the Polisario Front, which disputes Western Sahara with Morocco, into a Spanish hospital. Madrid said Rabat had relaxed its border guard. The two countries made up in 2022, when Pedro Sánchez backed Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara.
- The EU agreed its Pact on Migration and Asylum in 2024. It began to apply in June 2026.
The actors
- Pedro Sánchez, the Socialist prime minister since 2018. His government runs the border and asylum. Observador reports that he blamed trafficking networks for twisting a court ruling on returns.
- Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who leads the PP, the main opposition party, and Juan Jesús Vivas, the PP president of Ceuta since 2001. Both blame Morocco. The reports we hold do not carry Morocco's own account.
- The National High Court, the Spanish court that hears crimes against the state.
- Italy. Giorgia Meloni's government brought back checks on travellers from Spain on 1 August, FAZ reports. Spain answered with checks of its own. Schengen allows such checks only as a temporary measure.
- The European Commission. Magnus Brunner, the commissioner for internal affairs and migration, is reviewing whether Italy's checks are proportionate.
What is at stake
- Spain's relations with Morocco.
- Free movement between two Schengen states.
- An early test of the new asylum pact. Hungary has already cited Ceuta as its reason to extend its own border measures.
- Spanish politics before a general election due by 2027.
Where it stands. Thousands of people remain in Ceuta, but the reports disagree on how many. Madrid has taken over part of the port to put up tents. Italy and Spain had both extended their checks into late September when we last read them. What caused the crossing is still disputed.
The story so far
- Euractiv puts 80,000 across the Ceuta border in two days. El Mundo says thousands, ABC says invasion · 6 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- The figure for the 30 and 31 July crossing: 70,000 or 80,000, and where neither number comes from
- Whether Morocco engineered the crossing, and who says so
- How many people are still in Ceuta, and how many of them are children
- What Italy's checks on travellers from Spain have actually caught
